Writer’s Prompt: The Commissioner’s Print: A Forensic Flash Fiction Crime Story

A single lifted print matches an active homicide scene to the city’s top cop—leaving an intern with seconds to choose between career suicide and real death.

Writer’s Prompt

The comparator light hummed against the quiet of the basement lab, casting a sterile white halo over Ron’s desk. Side by side on the split-screen monitor sat two ridge patterns.

Left: a smeared partial latent lifted from the mahogany banister at 414 Elm Street, where a defense attorney had bled out at sunrise.

Right: a pristine index finger lifted an hour ago from a highball tumbler at the diner across from headquarters.

Ron clicked the overlay function. Delta matched delta. Core bifurcated into core. Nine points of minutiae locked in, then twelve, then sixteen. A court-admissible certainty.

He reached for the grease-pencil note he’d taped to the glass’s cardboard sleeve: Booth 4, center table, tall man in navy overcoat.

Police Commissioner Thomas Vance.

The air in Ron’s lungs turned to ice water. Bile surged up his throat, sharp and metallic. A clerical error wouldn’t save him here; he had cleared the optics himself before lunch. Vance was a civic lion, a decorated hero slated to run for mayor. Ron was an unpaid intern with eight months left on his master’s degree.

If he was wrong—if a rogue artifact in the cyanoacrylate fumed a phantom ridge—he would be discarded as incompetent, blacklisted before his career ever began.

If he was right, the danger wasn’t academic. A commissioner who could gut an attorney in broad daylight wouldn’t blink at silencing an expendable student in an empty sub-basement.

The heavy fire door at the end of the hall clicked open. Polished oxfords echoed down the linoleum, pacing toward his station. Ron’s fingers hovered over the keyboard: Delete Scan or Export to Secure Server.

Where Does the Story Go Next?

Now it’s your turn to finish the piece. Consider which path tension takes:

  • Path A: The Exposure. Ron hits Export, locking the data into an external cloud repository before the heavy door swings open. When Vance steps in under the guise of an informal check-in, Ron must play the oblivious intern while knowing every second counts toward getting the file to federal oversight before Vance realizes he’s compromised.
  • Path B: The Complicity. Paralyzed by self-preservation, Ron hits Delete Scan and wipes the glass clean just as his lab supervisor—not Vance—walks in with updated orders. But erasing the data doesn’t erase the memory, forcing Ron to live with the moral decay of protecting a killer to save his own skin, until Vance subtly lets him know he knew about the glass all along.

How would you resolve Ron’s dilemma? Take the prompt, choose a path or forge your own, and write the final scene.
