Today’s Poem: To Thine Own Self be True by Pakenham Thomas Beatty

To Thine Own Self be True

Pakenham Thomas Beatty

By thine own soul’s law learn to live,
  And if men thwart thee take no heed,
And if men hate thee have no care;
  Sing thou thy song and do thy deed.
Hope thou thy hope and pray thy prayer,
  And claim no crown they will not give,
Nor bays they grudge thee for thy hair.

Keep thou thy soul-worn steadfast oath,
  And to thy heart be true thy heart;
What thy soul teaches learn to know,
  And play out thine appointed part,
And thou shalt reap as thou shalt sow,
  Nor helped nor hindered in thy growth,
To thy full stature thou shalt grow.

Fix on the future’s goal thy face,
  And let thy feet be lured to stray
Nowhither, but be swift to run,
  And nowhere tarry by the way,
Until at last the end is won
  And thou mayst look back from thy place
And see thy long day’s journey done.

Today’s Poem: Will The Real You Please Stand Up by Edward Sanford Martin

Will The Real You Please Stand Up

Edward Sanford Marton

Submit to pressure from your peers and you move down to their level.
Speak up for your own beliefs and you invite them up to your level.
If you move with the crowd, you’ll get to further than the crowd.
When 40 million people believe in a dumb idea, it’s still a dumb idea.
Simply swimming with the tide leaves you nowhere.
So if you believe in something that’s good, honest, and bright–—stand up for it.
Maybe your peers will get smart and drift your way.

Within my earthly temple there’s a crowd;
There’s one of us that’s humble, one that’s proud,
There’s one that’s broken-hearted for his sins,
There’s one that unrepentant sits and grins;
There’s one that loves his neighbor as himself,
And one that cares for naught but fame and pelf.
From such corroding care I should be free
If I could once determine whish is me!

Poem of the Day ~ I’m Nobody! Who Are You? (260)

I’m Nobody! Who Are You? (260)

Emily Dickinson

I’m Nobody! Who are you?
Are you – Nobody – too?
Then there’s a pair of us!
Don’t tell! they’d advertise – you know!

How dreary – to be – Somebody!
How public – like a Frog –
To tell one’s name – the livelong June –
To an admiring Bog!

What if I had a conversation with myself, would I find it interesting?

What if I had a conversation with myself, would I find it interesting? Would I find myself interesting? Would I talk only about myself and not allow my other self a chance to speak? My experience is that most people like to talk about themselves, their lives, problems and work. It’s only incidental that they draw an other into the conversation.  When we view a conversation as an exchange of ideas or experiences, we are likely to find each other interesting.

Think About It ~ What are you doing for others?

“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?'” (Martin Luther King, Jr.). Dr. King’s question is a challenge to move out of an ego-centered world into an other-centered world. It challenges us to move away from thinking solely about our self toward thinking about others. When we move into an other-centered world we begin to see the importance of connecting with each other. The more we connect, the more we recognize our survival is grounded in our working together for each other’s benefit.

Today’s Inspiration ~ Who Are You?

“Can you remember who you were, before the world told you who you should be?”

~ Charles Bukowski

Something to Think About

When we love another, we no longer think about ourselves, we think about the other. Whatever we do, we do for the other. It’s as if, after a long search, we finally found ourselves in the other. We wonder what life was like before we met the other. I hope you’ve found love in your life and it never lets go of you.
