Think About It ~ Stay in Balance

Balance is important in life. We can’t ride a bicycle without it. When we’re in balance our emotions compensate for each other. We more easily find that space where we feel peaceful. Are you out of balance? Is one area of your life overwhelming all the other areas? It may be time to bring things back into balance.

Today’s Health Tip ~ Want to Remain Independent and Mobile?

It can’t be emphasized enough: engaging in physical activity is the single most important thing you can do to maintain mobility and independence, no matter your age or your health status. It can help you control your weight. It’s the key to keeping your muscles and bones strong, your joints working properly, your heart healthy, and your metabolism revved. The more you move, the better your strength and balance will be, and the less likely you will be to fall or lose the ability to perform basic daily functions. And that’s on top of all the other health benefits of regular exercise, such as reduced risks of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and some cancers. Exercise even has positive effects on mood and may help improve cognitive function.

It’s a delicate balance to embrace and enjoy the present moment and simultaneously plan for the future. A part of us must be grounded in the present. Another part of us aspires for something better. This process is part of the human experience that remains with us throughout our lives. Those who master this balance discover the path to a peaceful and happy life.

A Better Life ~ Maintaining Balance in Life

I like veggies. I like fruit. I like unsalted nuts. I also like pizza and pasta. I try to maintain a sensible balance between what I want to eat and what I know I should eat for good health. Most areas of our life have contrasting forces. For example, there is a balance between work and play. There is a balance between using our digital media and stepping away from it. Our lives can be improved when we balance the opposing contrasts.

Keep Your Balance

If you’re young and active, good balance will help you avoid injuries. If you’re older, it will keep you active longer and lower the chances you’ll fall and break a bone. No matter your age, good balance means better muscle tone, a healthier heart, and greater confidence. Yoga and tai chi are great ways to work on it, but just about anything that keeps you moving, even walking, can help.

Here’s what I do each morning: As part of my daily stretching routine, I stretch each of my quads. I stand on one leg and grab hold of my foot on the other leg and pull it up toward my butt. I hold the “flamingo” poise for 30 seconds. I end up stretching my quads and practicing balance on each leg.

Longevity Tip ~ Enjoy Life

Indulge … in moderation. 

Diet and exercise are good, but hey, you’ve got to live a little. Centenarians seem to have found a balance between taking care of their health and learning when to indulge a bit. Whether it’s a glass of wine, a bowl of your favorite ice cream, a strong cup of coffee or Dr. Pepper, it’s all about striking a balance between giving yourself all that you need and a taste of what you want. Just don’t go overboard.
