Thinking Out Loud:

But how could you live and have no story to tell? ~ Fyodor Dostoevsky

NOTE: Most of us never think of ourselves as writers. Yet, every day we are writing (figuratively) a chapter to our story. Our stories have villains and heroes. They are filled with love, betrayal, success and loss. There are twists and turns in our stories that we can’t predict. We are writing our story and we are the central character in our story. Our central character (you and me) each day enters into a new and often unpredictable adventure. We can’t predict the events of the day, we can determine how our central character reacts to the events. It is the central character’s reaction to the events of his/her day that will color who the central character is, what is important to him/her, what he/she values, and the kind of person he or she is. Playing the leading role is powerful stuff. It’s up to us how the story turn out. We can change the direction of the central character, his/her attitude, values, and speech any time we choose to do so. Is it time to change?

Thinking Out Loud: What Have You Done Today to Earn Another’s Trust?

Today’s Thinking Out Loud reflection is on Harper Lee’s  work, To Kill a Mockingbird.

“We’re paying the highest tribute you can pay a man. We trust him to do right. It’s that simple.” ― Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird

Note: One can’t order trust online. Nor can one expect somebody to trust him/her without first earning that trust. Trust results from the accumulation of hundreds of small action. It only takes one act to destroy all the previous good acts. Once lost, it’s difficult to regain another’s trust. Trust is an imprint on one’s character. It’s indelible. We earn another’s trust by keeping our word, standing on trusted values, and never taking the cowards way out when facing difficult challenges.

On What Are You Spending Your Time? Today’s Inspiring Quote

Tell me to what you pay attention and I will tell you who you are.”

We Choose What We Become ~ Quote from Heraclitus

The content of your character is your choice. Day by day, what you choose, what you think and what you do is who you become.

Daily Inspirational Quotes ~ It Makes Sense

“It takes less time to do a thing right, than it does to explain why you did it wrong.”

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Think About It ~ You’ll Know Which Person You Want as a Friend

You can tell a person’s character by how he/she reacts under pressure, stress, or betrayal. When the odds are stacked against them, do they lie, cheat, or blame others? If they do, it is a sign of their character.

If, under the same pressure, stress, or betrayal, the person stands tall, walks with his/her head held high, and doesn’t change or shift his/her values, you’ve met someone special. They’ll stand by you in good and bad times. Keep them close by. It’s not easy to be such a person, something deep inside tells them they have no other way to act regardless of the cost.

Today’s Power Thought ~ It All Start with a Solid Foundation

What can’t predict what will happen to us. Lots of things we cherish and believe to be important can be taken from us. What can’t be taken from us are our values, integrity, and character. If they are grounded in right action, they will carry you through the tough times.

What If . . .

What if I did the things I know I should be doing? Wow, that question demands great responsibility from me. If I do the things I’m supposed to do, the people I live with, work with, and know can count on me. When I do what I am supposed to do, no matter how unpleasant or difficult, I make a big difference in my life and in the lives of those who surround me.

Today’s Poem ~ A Character

A Character

William Wordsworth

I marvel how Nature could ever find space
For so many strange contrasts in one human face:
There’s thought and no thought, and there’s paleness and bloom
And bustle and sluggishness, pleasure and gloom.

There’s weakness, and strength both redundant and vain;
Such strength as, if ever affliction and pain
Could pierce through a temper that’s soft to disease,
Would be rational peace–a philosopher’s ease.

There’s indifference, alike when he fails or succeeds,
And attention full ten times as much as there needs;
Pride where there’s no envy, there’s so much of joy;
And mildness, and spirit both forward and coy.

There’s freedom, and sometimes a diffident stare
Of shame scarcely seeming to know that she’s there,
There’s virtue, the title it surely may claim,
Yet wants heaven knows what to be worthy the name.

This picture from nature may seem to depart,
Yet the Man would at once run away with your heart;
And I for five centuries right gladly would be
Such an odd such a kind happy creature as he.

Something to Think About

Winning streaks are great, but they don’t last. Losing streaks are painful, but they don’t last. We dance through life going through the good times and being hit in the gut by bad times. They happen. How we deal with them, both the good and bad, marks us with an indelible mark. It is the mark of character on our humanity. Did we handle the winning moments with grace and humility? Did we handle the tough times with courage, patience, and endurance? It’s never too late to change how we react. We don’t have to be what we were or are. We can be what we desire to become.
