Writer’s Prompt: The Cold Case Cipher: A Flash Fiction Mystery

She could solve any mystery in hours—until the evidence pointed straight to her best friend.

Writer’s. Prompt

Marci Quest’s mind moved like lightning through gridlines. Once the world-record holder for speed-solving the New York Times and London Times crosswords, she’d long swapped wordplay for cold cases. When detectives hit a wall, they sent the digital wreckage to Marci.

She downloaded the zip file, closed her eyes to clear her mental board, and tore through 5,000 pages in two hours. Patterns materialized. Anomalies aligned. She knew who killed Mr. Harrison—their high school English teacher—and exactly how it was executed.

Karen Street.

A mother of two, happily married, and Marci’s best friend since childhood.

Marci stared at the illuminated screen, her pulse thumping. The forensics were indisputable: a misdirected alibi, a subtle toxicological signature hidden in Harrison’s tea, and a missing room key matching Karen’s old locker combination. Marci understood the how instantly. But the why was a dark, impenetrable void.

Her phone chimed. A text from Karen: Wine at my place tonight? Kids are finally asleep.

Marci’s fingers hovered over the glass screen. She had solved hundreds of cases for detectives without hesitation. But turning in this file meant shattering a family, destroying her best friend, and sending Karen away for life. Worse, if Marci called the lead detective right now, she’d never know what Harrison had done thirty years ago to warrant such a quiet, calculated execution.

Marci grabbed her coat, locked her laptop, and walked out into the cool rain toward Karen’s house. She would face her friend across the kitchen island—and demand the truth.

How does the story end? Does Marci turn her best friend in, or does Karen’s motive change everything? Write the next line in your mind—or leave a comment with how you think Marci handles the confrontation.
