Writer’s Prompt: The Final Broth: A Kitchen Sabotage Flash Fiction

A fortune rests on one bowl of broth—and a pinch of venomous powder hidden beneath a flattering smile.

Writer’s Prompt

The kitchen was a white inferno of leaping burner flames and clattering carbon steel. Between Ming and Jin stood the Grand Dragon Trophy, a life-altering purse, and three judges whose palates could detect an errant drop of sesame oil at twenty paces.

Forty seconds remained.

Ming wiped the stinging sweat from his brow, fingers slipping into his apron pocket. The tiny waxed paper packet was slick against his palm. Inside rested crushed mountain gall root: odorless, gray, and foul beyond imagination. A single pinch would curdle Jin’s fragrant crab roe broth into bitter chalk. The judges would recoil, the trophy would be Ming’s, and the mounting debts back in Shenzhen would vanish overnight.

Ming drew a breath, stepped across the brass floor divider, and clapped Jin on the shoulder.

“Brother Jin,” Ming exclaimed, voice trembling with rehearsed reverence. “Look at that sheen! Your grandmother’s master stock—no chef in the province could match that clarity. Look how it coats the spoon!”

Jin blinked, startled out of his frantic plating. His proud gaze shifted instinctively down toward the shimmering golden surface of his ladle. “You… you truly think so, Ming?”

“Magnificent,” Ming murmured, leaning over the steaming wok. In the blur of his moving wrist, his right thumb flicked open the fold of paper beneath the rim.

“Ten seconds!” the floor marshal bellowed.

Jin snapped his head up, his dark eyes locking onto Ming’s twitching fingers just millimeters above the broth. The steam between them cleared. A slow, chilling smile touched the corners of Jin’s mouth—not of pride, but of cold calculation—as his free hand rose sharply from below the prep counter, gripping a small porcelain shaker of his own.

The bell clanged.

Two Opposing Paths for the Ending

  • Direction A: The Trap Reverses. Jin was anticipating the sabotage the entire time. The shaker contains an alkaline neutralizing oil that turns Ming’s poison into a vivid crimson dye upon contact, exposing Ming’s malice instantly before the judges and cameras.
  • Direction B: Mutual Destruction. Jin wasn’t defending himself; he was sabotaging Ming’s braised pork belly simultaneously. Both dishes reach the judges tainted beyond salvage, leaving both chefs facing public ruin and disqualification.

Take the reins, pick your path, and write the final lines that seal their fate!
