Writer’s Prompt: The Dying Declaration: A Cold Case Flash Fiction Story

A cryptic, blood-smudged clue left at a five-year-old crime scene finally makes sense at 3:00 a.m.—but unraveling the secret might mean opening a door that can never be closed.

The Dying Declaration

Three a.m. hit like a bucket of ice water. Detective Tony Sanchez bolted upright, his chest heaving, the tangled bedsheets trapping his legs. Beside him, Sarah stirred, squinting against the sliver of streetlight cutting through the blinds.

“Tony? What’s wrong?” she murmured, her voice thick with sleep.

Tony didn’t answer right away. For five agonizing years, the murder of Susan Tyler had haunted his desk—a frozen file centered around a single scrap of torn paper found beneath the victim’s kitchen table. The graphite lines, scribbled by a trembling, dying hand, had seemed impossible: M ver.

He had treated it like a cryptic crossword puzzle, agonizing over missing letters, searching for names, street addresses, or obscure acronyms. But in the quiet stillness of the night, the spatial gap between the letters finally clicked into place.

“I know who killed Susan,” Tony whispered, the cold reality settling deep into his gut. “She wasn’t trying to spell a name. She was writing ‘My lover.’

Sarah froze. The blanket slipped from her shoulder as she sat up, the room suddenly feeling impossibly quiet.

“Her lover?” Sarah asked softly. “Tony, that doesn’t make sense. Her family swore she was completely single.”

“That’s why the case stalled,” Tony said, swinging his legs over the edge of the bed and grabbing the case folder from his nightstand. “It was an affair. The killer took the rest of the page because it had his name, but he missed the torn corner under the rug.”

He turned back to Sarah, holding up the yellowed crime scene photo. But Sarah wasn’t looking at the paper. She was staring directly at him, her expression unreadable in the dark, her right hand resting quietly inside her open nightstand drawer.

“Tony,” she whispered gently. “Are you absolutely sure you want to solve this tonight?”
