Healthy Tips: Slow but Steady is Best

Set realistic goals: Don’t try to change too much too soon.

Typical first few weeks in January at the gym. There are more people working hard to lose the ten pounds they put on over the holidays. Most will quit within a few weeks. If they slowed down and worked consistently they’d achieve their goals. There was this one guy sitting on a bench near the machine I was using. He is about 30 pounds overweight. His face was bright red. I was afraid he was going to have a stroke or heart attack. Eventually, his face and balding head turned pink, that’s progress. He went to the machine next to me. He chose to lift a heavy weight. I was impressed. He managed to lift it, but could only do a couple of reps before he quit. He was bright red again. Maybe he was trying to impress the ladies, I don’t know. I do know if he lifted a much lighter weight and did more reps he’d burn more calories and make more progress toward the heavier weights he wants to lift. I’ve been exercising most of my life. I’ve learned taking it small and slow prevents injuries and if I am consistent in my exercise, I’ll achieve my goals. If you’ve made exercise a goal this year, don’t quit. Don’t get discouraged. We will hit plateaus but work through them. Stay at it.

Healthy Tips: Give Your Body a Gift, Exercise

Today’s Healthy Tip:

Get regular exercise: Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise most days of the week.

I like to exercise. It’s something I’ve done since I was a kid. It feels good to work my muscles, feel my body sweating, and to let go of stress through exercising. Not everyone feels the way I do about exercise. I get that. Think of it this way, you buy a new car (let’s make it a combustible for this example). You decide not to do oil changes or maintenance on it, it’s too much trouble. What is going to happen to the new car? Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure that one out. It’s the same way with our bodies. Find an exercise that fits your lifestyle and follow it. Your body will thank you.

Great Healthy Tips: Follow the 80/20 Rule

Follow the 80/20 Rule — Eat nutrient-dense whole foods 80% of the time and allow room for indulgences 20% of the time.

Who’s perfect? Correct answer, no one. I am really disciplined with my eating and exercise habits. If a friend invites me out for pizza, don’t ask twice, this Italian will be in your driveway waiting for you. There was a time when I didn’t know when to quit eating pizza. Now, I limit myself to two slices, okay, maybe three if it’s really good. Don’t be afraid you lost it if you take a meal off to enjoy yourself now and them.

Great Healthy Tips: Getting to a Healthy Weight

Maintain a healthy weight to lower risks of chronic diseases.

It’s important to maintain a healthy weight. When you factor in stress and multiple other factors it can be tough. Here’s what I do to maintain a healthy weight. I exercise. I’ve always loved exercising. I’ve found, for me, I have to go at least 45 minutes for it to make a difference in my calorie burn. I also cut out all white bread in favor of whole grain and seeded bread. I live in south Texas so you know tortillas are part of our lifestyle. I found a tortilla brand, Ole, that uses flax seed in their tortillas, they’re low in calories (70) and no bad fats. They’re my go-to at lunch. I don’t eat sugary sweets, red meats, or deep fried foods. I eat heaps of veggies, fruit, and salmon three days a week. I make my own refried beans to put in my tortillas. I will have a chicken/broccoli stir fry a couple of times a week. Got to get enough protein. C’mon, you can do it. Get to a healthy weight with just a few modifications.

Great Health Tips: Set a Schedule and Work It

    Today’s Great Health Tip

Consistency matters more than intensity when starting a new exercise routine.

This tip is true in so many parts of our lives. The key is slow but sure. Try to take off 10 pounds in two weeks. It can be done, but chances are high it’s going back on. If you’ve never run and decide to hit the hills and run a 5 K, you might make it, your body probably won’t be happy. Patience, persistence, and going after your goal every day will deliver a win for you.

Great Healthy Tips: Do This Before Exercising

Stretch daily to improve flexibility and prevent injuries.

Note: I stretch soon after I wake up. One of my favorite stretches is the child’s pose. It loosens my lower back and shoulders. I’m ready to take on the world after a 90 second stretch.

Great Healthy Tips: Doing This Will Help You To Live Longer

    Today’s Health Tip

Aim for 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise per week (e.g., walking, cycling).

Today’s Thought: Have a Great Day Every Day

I am a gym rat, I can’t escape it. I’ve always enjoyed exercising. When I don’t exercise I know something is missing from my life that is important. I enjoy testing my myself and improving. I enjoy the camaraderie of the friends I’ve made at the gym. As important to me as exercise is, love is so much more important I can’t compare the two. I have five wonderful daughters who love me. Their love is priceless. I have friends and neighbors who love me. Another priceless gift. Love is a two way street. That’s the way it works. If love is important to you, you can’t wait for it to knock on your door. You got to start out each day and love each person who comes into your life. Try it for a couple of months and you’ll be having a great day, every day.

Health Facts: It’s Time to Exercise

Here are two lesser-known but important health facts about daily vigorous exercise:

    1. Improved Gut Health: Vigorous exercise has been shown to positively impact gut health by increasing the diversity of gut bacteria. A diverse microbiome is associated with better digestion, enhanced immune function, and even improved mood and mental health. Regular intense physical activity can help promote a more balanced and varied gut microbiome, which in turn supports overall health.
    2. Increased Lifespan of Immune Cells: Engaging in daily vigorous exercise can extend the lifespan of certain immune cells, particularly T-cells, which play a crucial role in defending the body against infections. This means that regular intense exercise can potentially enhance your immune system’s ability to fight off pathogens more effectively, contributing to better long-term health and resilience against illnesses.

Today’s Thought: Know Where to Focus

Have you ever been in a situation where you were worried about the outcome? Did you feel moments of great anxiety? I think we all have had those experiences. I know I have had them. When we cease to care about the outcome (I know it’s hard), we free ourselves to concentrate on what we are doing as we move toward the outcome. Let’s take, for example, an annual physical. Instead of worrying about the blood work, what if we concentrated on exercising and maintaining a healthy diet. When we do, we increase the chances that our doctor will tell us to keep doing what we’re doing because our blood work hit all the right notes. Yes, we want great outcomes, but a better ocus is on what we are doing moment by moment leading to the outcome.
