A Better Life ~ Is It Time to Connect?

Is it time to broaden your circle of contacts beyond work and friends? What about your neighbors, the folks who life next door or on the same floor? The more we connect with those near us, the more we lose our sense of isolation and develop a sense of connectivity. It’s emotionally and physically healthy to make connections. When we connect we have people to call on when we need a hand. We also have the opportunity to lend a helping hand. From a personal experience as a widower, it has made all the difference for me. I have great neighbors who have my back and I have their back as well.

Today’s Poem ~ Friends

Friends
William Butler Yeats
Now must I these three praise —
Three women that have wrought
What joy is in my days:
One because no thought,
Nor those unpassing cares,
No, not in these fifteen
Many-times-troubled years,
Could ever come between
Mind and delighted mind;
And one because her hand
Had strength that could unbind
What none can understand,
What none can have and thrive,
Youth’s dreamy load, till she
So changed me that I live
Labouring in ecstasy.
And what of her that took
All till my youth was gone
With scarce a pitying look?
How could I praise that one?
When day begins to break
I count my good and bad,
Being wakeful for her sake,
Remembering what she had,
What eagle look still shows,
While up from my heart’s root
So great a sweetness flows
I shake from head to foot.

COVID-19 Is a Bummer – It Can’t Stop Good Things From Happening

Here are a few of the good things I witnessed or experienced today:

  • I had the most delightful surprise this morning. I was on my daily walk (can’t wait for the gyms to reopen) when a car pulled over, the passenger side window rolled down and there was my friend. We had the best conversation about this and that and discovered we enjoyed the same BBC comedies. Grateful for my friend stopping. Grateful for the conversation.
  • I’m a big fan of rainbows. The bigger the rainbow, the better. A daughter who lives rainbowin Illinois sent me this photo of a rainbow she took this morning. I’m sharing it with you. Good things are coming our way. Keep your arms wide open. Grateful.
  • We’re another day closer to a solution. Keep smiling. We’ve got it on the run. Don’t give up. Hold on!

The little things are priceless treasures to me. They brighten my day. I hope your day is filled to overflowing with the little things that make life worth living.

Grateful for all the above.

🍎 Health Hack: Talk Your Way Through Stress

Sometimes calling a friend is not an option. If this is the case, talking calmly to yourself can be the next best thing. Don’t worry about seeming crazy — just tell yourself why you’re stressed out, what you have to do to complete the task at hand, and most importantly, that everything will be okay.

If You Want Friends Don’t Be A Stranger

As a species wired for social connectedness, we inherently know how important it is to live a life with sustained intimate relationships. Harvard psychiatrist Robert Waldinger is the director of the Laboratory of Adult Development at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he’s spearheading a study on adult happiness that has tracked hundreds of American men for over 75 years. In his TED talk outlining the findings, his main conclusion, beautiful in its simplicity, demonstrated just that: Form good relationships and you’ll be all right.

Longevity Tip: Aging Well Is Like Being Tickled

Fitness Hack: It’s a Team Approach

“A workout buddy is hugely helpful for keeping motivated, but it’s important to find someone who will inspire—not discourage. So make a list of all your exercise-loving friends, then see who fits this criteria, says Andrew Kastor, an ASICS running coach: Can your pal meet to exercise on a regular basis? Is she supportive (not disparaging) of your goals? And last, will your bud be able to keep up with you or even push your limits in key workouts? If you’ve got someone that fits all three, make that phone call.”
