Podcast Description: Episode 110: Each morning, I start my day by checking my iPhone and iPad for messages, emails, and sports scores. Recently, I played a love song playlist suggested by Apple Music. These songs, once tear-inducing, now bring back cherished memories of my life with Babe, making me smile. Reflecting on my reaction to the songs, I realized how far I’ve come in my grieving journey. It’s been long and challenging, but now the road is smoother, though not fast.

I compared my transformation to growing from a child to an adult, with grief teaching me resilience and compassion. This journey, though filled with anger and frustration, has made me mentally and emotionally stronger. A recent conversation with a man who had suffered strokes highlighted our shared experience of loss and growth through suffering.

Quoting J.R.R. Tolkien and Brian Jacques, I emphasized that grief teaches us valuable lessons and helps us grow. Our experiences shape us, and choosing to be better through them makes us blessings to others. Remember, your best days are ahead, and your journey has made you the special person you are today.

Today’s Thought: You’re Snoozing, You’re Losing

When I was in basic training in the army, our platoon sergeant would come into the barracks at 4 a.m. flick the lights on and holler at the top of his lungs, “Get up, you’re snoozing, you’re losing.” We had thirty minutes to get ready for inspection. I’ve always been an early riser so the sergeant’s screaming didn’t bother me. There was a hidden message in the sergeant’s command to get up. I’m not sure he saw it or I thought about it at the time. The hidden message relates to time. You may be a billionaire or a pauper, it doesn’t matter, we all have 24 hours in our day. Money can’t buy an additional hour. How we use that 24 hours determines our character, relationships, and our life’s journey. We can snooze it away or we can make a difference. It’s all up to us.

Today’s Thought:

Love yourself-accept yourself-forgive yourself-and be good to yourself, because without you the rest of us are without a source of many wonderful things. ~ Leo Buscaglia

One of the most difficult journeys any of us take is the journey into our heart and to heal it. It takes heaps of courage to take that journey because it is a journey of forgiving one’s self and freeing all the things within our heart that keep us trapped. Perhaps it is a parent or sibling issue. It may be memories from school. It may be regrets. Whatever it is you’ll recognize it when you journey into your heart. When we love ourselves we can look at ourselves in the mirror with compassionate eyes and smile. We can offer ourselves a freedom others cannot offer us. The most courageous words we can say to ourselves are: “I love you.” “I forgive you.” And, “You’re perfect just as you are.”

Journey’s End, a Poem by J. R. R. Tolkien

Journey’s End by J. R. R. Tolkien

In western lands beneath the Sun
The flowers may rise in Spring,
The trees may bud, the waters run,
The merry finches sing.
Or there maybe ’tis cloudless night,
And swaying branches bear
The Elven-stars as jewels white
Amid their branching hair.

Though here at journey’s end I lie
In darkness buried deep,
Beyond all towers strong and high,
Beyond all mountains steep,
Above all shadows rides the Sun
And Stars for ever dwell:
I will not say the Day is done,
Nor bid the Stars farewell.
