Something to Think About

What is happiness for you? I’ve heard folks say if they hit the lottery they’d be happy. Research proves that money doesn’t make us happy. What makes you happy? I can answer for myself. I am happy when I get off a plane and find family waiting for me with waving arms and shouts of joy. I am happy when I sit alone and feel as if God is sitting next to me. I know it’s a moment of grace. I am happy when I am with people who love me. I am happy when I see the hummingbirds fitting around the yard. I am happy when a neighbor calls out my name and says, “How you doing, Ray?” These are a few of the things that make me happy. What about You?

Every once in a while, if we’re fortunate, we’ll meet someone who’s highly successful who freely passes along the secrets to be successful. We don’t have to ask him or her to tell us the secrets. They offer them to us on a clean plate.  If we’re wise, we listen and apply them. We’re grateful. And, we do the same thing for others when it’s our turn.

Something to Think About

Turn off the music. Turn off the computer. Set the smart phone to do not disturb. Dare to be alone with your thoughts. Dare to be alone in the silence. It takes courage to walk in the silence. Once you become comfortable walking in the silence, you’ll discover the amazing and wonderful person you’ve always been.

When I read the news I see much evidence of people turning from the sunshine to face the darkness. There’s a lot of finger pointing, blaming, criticizing on every page. The more we accuse and criticize, the more the other defends. It works the same way with us. The more we’re criticized, the more we defend. There’s a better way. We can turn toward sunshine, set aside differences, and work together to making tomorrow better than today.

I heard a wise person say that many leaders in all facets of life are in it for power, prestige, and possessions. The person called it the three P’s. I think there’s a fourth P that transcends all the other P’s . The fourth P is for people. It’s for the voiceless people. It’s for young people wondering what the future holds. It’s for aging people who are lonely. It’s for school children who want to go to school safely. it’s for people without a job who want to work. It’s for parents who want their children to have more opportunities than they had. Yes, the fourth P is for all people, regardless of color, race, religion, sex, or place.

I live in a democracy, voting is important to me. It’s important that we vote every time we have the opportunity. Encourage everyone you know to vote whether or not they agree with you. We get the kind of government we deserve. If our government officials are not responsive, we can vote them out. Great teams don’t keep playing players who don’t perform. When we don’t vote, we hand poor performing elected officials a blank check.

I was with my dad on the day he died. I was holding his hand, praying with him when he breathed his last breath. In his last hours, he wasn’t worried about how much money he saved, if his favorite teams won or lost, or what was happening politically. He was happy to have family with him. This was what was important to him. Nothing else mattered. Family and love are at the top of list of what’s important.

Young children rapidly learn when they begin to meet other children that the world is not all about them. They learn, sometimes, painfully, that life is full of give and take. Sometimes, winning and losing. I see many adults who feel the world is all about them and their needs. These types of people have learned to manipulate, spin, and attack anyone who does not view the world from their viewpoint. Life is a lot better when we realize we have to work together for everyone’s benefit. When life becomes a zero-sum game, power triumphs over people. It’s time for a change.

A Better Life ~ There is Another Way

We’re never stuck. There is always another way. We may not see the other way, however, if we keep looking we’ll find a better way. Keep looking, talk to other people, read everything you can about your challenge. You’ll find it. There is another way.

Why get angry when things don’t turn out the way you want them to turn out? The best ball teams don’t win every game. The best ball teams know there’s another game tomorrow. They leave the loss behind and concentrate on preparing for the next game. They know that’s the only place they have a chance to win. Don’t waste time and energy on being angry about something that happened, put your energy into what you can do today or tomorrow.
