Thinking Out Loud ~ Dare To Take The Adventure

Free the Child Within

Beginning today I am reflecting on Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s work, The Little Prince. The Little Prince is a modern classic.

Saint-Exupéry in writes in The Little Prince, “I showed my masterpiece to the grown-ups and I asked them if my drawing frightened them.  They answered: “Why should anyone be frightened by a hat?” My drawing did not represent the hat. It represented a boa snake that digested an elephant. Then I drew the inside of a boa snake so that the grown-ups could understand. They always need explanations. The grown-ups advised me to put aside the drawings of open or closed boa snakes, and to become rather interested in geography, history, calculation, and grammar. That is how I gave up, at the age of 6, a magnificent career as a painter. I had been discouraged by the failure of my drawings . . . The grown-ups never understand anything by themselves, and, for children, it’s tiresome always giving them some explanations.”

NOTE: How many of us have been discouraged by “grownups” when we were younger. They saw the world through their fearful eyes and not through the eyes of an adventurous youth. No matter your age, open the door to the child within and dare to go on the marvelous journey you always wanted to take.

Feel Good Tip ~ It’s Going to Turn Out Right

Optimists Are Healthier

A recent Harvard School of Public Health study found that positive psychological well-being, which includes self-acceptance and positive relations with others, is linked to improved heart health. However, having an optimistic attitude was the biggest predictor of all: People who tend to look on the bright side have fewer heart problems, such as cardiovascular disease. They also have better cholesterol readings: In a separate survey of nearly 1,000 middle aged men and women, those who reported higher levels of optimism had lower levels of triglycerides, or less fat in the blood.

Note: We didn’t have much materially when I grew up. I did experience lots of love. I also experienced a mom and dad who worked in low blue-collar jobs encouraging my brother and me to learn and go to college. They didn’t complain about the cold winters in an unheated cold water flat. They didn’t complain when they got laid off from the factories. They knew they’d make it. I didn’t know it at the time, but they were passing on their sense of optimism to me. They taught me to keep plugging and sooner or later it’s all going to turn out right. What a great inheritance. Poem for Today ~ I Have a Rendezvous With Life

I Have a Rendezvous With Life

Countee Cullen

I have a rendezvous with Life,
In days I hope will come,
Ere youth has sped, and strength of mind,
Ere voices sweet grow dumb.
I have a rendezvous with Life,
When Spring’s first heralds hum.
Sure some would cry it’s better far
To crown their days with sleep
Than face the road, the wind and rain,
To heed the calling deep.
Though wet nor blow nor space I fear,
Yet fear I deeply, too,
Lest Death should meet and claim me ere
I keep Life’s rendezvous.

Feel Good Tip ~ Watch Happiness Happen

I liked this quote from a novel I’m reading by David Baldacci, “You take life as it comes to you, and it’s really perfect.” It made a lot of sense to me. I know I’d like life to be the way I want it to be, that is seldom the case. When I allow myself to be disappointed because life isn’t the way I want it to be I become the creator of my unhappiness. When I take life as it is and do my best to make the most of it, happiness happens. Make the best of it in any moment and watch happiness happen.
