Be the Sunshine Someone Needs Today

Yesterday’s gloom can linger—unless you choose to become the light that lifts the people around you.

Yesterday it was cloudy, colder than normal, gloomy, and drizzly in San Antonio. The weather kept everyone subdued. People scurried in and out of the supermarket—no time for small talk, no warm smiles, no friendly hello.

Overnight, everything changed. Today the temperature reached a pleasant 76 degrees with sunshine pouring out of a deep blue sky. People waved. They lingered. They were out shopping. Even the intersections felt calmer—no horns, no tension.

What a difference a shift in the weather can make to our attitudes.

But here’s the secret: we don’t need the weather to change before we do.

We can become that change for the people around us.

Bring the sunshine.

Bring the blue sky.

Bring the warmth that awakens hope in everyone who crosses your path.

❓ How do you bring sunshine into someone’s day—even on the gloomy ones?

Change Your Questions, Transform Your Life

What if one small shift — changing the questions you ask yourself and others — could open doors you didn’t even know were there?

One of the most transformative moments of my life came wrapped inside a simple truth: If you change the question you’re asking, you change the answer you’ll receive. That insight didn’t stroll into my life — it hit me like an NFL linebacker at full speed. Suddenly, I started examining the questions I’d been silently asking myself every day. Were they helping me grow, or were they quietly steering me in the wrong direction?

Most of us never question our own questions. Many are automatic — “Which route should I take to work?” — small, forgettable, functional. But some questions shape the emotional tone of our days and our relationships. A partner walks through the door, and we ask, “How was your day?” We get the predictable shrug: “Okay.” But change the question to, “Tell me one good thing that happened today,” and something shifts. Thought is required. Reflection is triggered. Connection becomes possible. A follow-up — “Can we sit and you tell me about it?” — opens the door to genuine dialogue. You’ll soon discover that when you change your questions, the light within you shines with the brilliance of a Texas noonday sun.

The truth is simple and liberating:

If you don’t like the way your life is going, change the questions that guide it. New questions create new answers, and new answers create a new way forward.

Let your questions shine a little light within today.

Gratitude That Moves Us Forward: A Thanksgiving Reflection for the Heart

Thanksgiving isn’t just about looking back with gratitude—it’s about using those memories to step into tomorrow with kindness, purpose, and joy.

Thanksgiving has a beautiful way of slowing our steps and softening our focus.

Today we remember the small kindnesses, the people who lifted us, the moments that caught us off guard with joy. We remember the faces around the table, and the voices we still hear in our hearts. Gratitude doesn’t ask for perfection—it simply invites us to pause long enough to notice the good that is already here.

But Thanksgiving is more than a day of remembering. It’s also a gentle nudge toward who we can become next.

Every gratitude we name becomes a stepping-stone.

Every blessing we recognize becomes a new responsibility.

Every person who helped us stand a little taller reminds us to help someone else rise.

When we look at our lives through the lens of gratitude, forward becomes brighter. We become more patient, more compassionate, more aware of the quiet struggles in others. Gratitude isn’t meant to stay inside us—it’s meant to move through us, shaping the way we walk into tomorrow.

So today, let’s do more than say thank you.

Let’s live our gratitude out loud.

Let’s be generous with our kindness, bold with our compassion, and willing to use our gifts in ways that strengthen the communities we call home.

May the gratitude you feel today become the gentle force that leads you forward—one act of goodness, one gesture of hope, one bright moment at a time.

While We Eat, 24,000 Die from Hunger or Hunger Related Causes

While our grocery shelves are full, millions go without. Every meal you eat in comfort can become a quiet act of compassion for someone who cannot.

I stopped by my local supermarket this morning on my way home from the gym. All the shelves were stocked. Among the things I bought were broccoli, sweet potatoes, Roma tomatoes, avocados, and frozen blueberries. I didn’t have to worry if the supermarket would have those items. I can’t say the same for many people in our world. Do you know how many people die from hunger or hunger related causes each day on our planet?

Every day, an estimated 24,000 people die from hunger and hunger-related causes, according to the World Food Programme (WFP). The number is staggering — but it’s not without hope. Each statistic represents a life that could be saved through collective compassion, sustainable farming, and simple human kindness. Hunger isn’t a mystery of fate; it’s a challenge we can meet together. Awareness is the first step toward action, and each of us can become part of the solution — by supporting local food drives, reducing waste, and remembering that gratitude for our daily meals is the beginning of empathy for those who have none..

Here are three things you can do:

  1. Donate a portion of your weekly groceries (a can or two each week works) to your local food bank.
  2. Donate money to a reputable charity that works to feed the Hungary.
  3. Donate a portion of your time to volunteer at a food kitchen.

What’s one small way you could share a meal, donate, or volunteer to help reduce hunger in your community this week?

Change doesn’t start in governments or boardrooms — it begins at the kitchen table, with people like us. A single act of kindness, multiplied by millions, can turn hunger into hope. 🌎✨

Patience, Focus, and Action: Lessons from My Patio Geckos

Small geckos may look ordinary, but their patience, focus, and perfect timing can teach us how to live with purpose and seize opportunities.

I have lots of geckos around my home. If I sit on my patio I will see them lurking nearby. I marvel at these small creatures. They change colors to match their background. More impressively, they can sit perfectly still and watch until a small insect walks by and then they leap into action. The poor insect never had a chance. They keep my patio free of small spiders. And, if a mosquito chooses to land near them it’s another snack. The geckos teach me important lessons. They teach me to be patient, focused, and when the opportunity comes don’t hesitate. These are lessons we can apply to our life each day. Make it a great day.

Points to Ponder

  1. Patience: Where in your life do you need to slow down and wait, rather than rushing into action?
  2. Focus: What small distractions pull you away from your goals, and how can you stay locked in like a gecko?
  3. Timing: When opportunities arrive, do you hesitate—or do you leap forward with confidence?
  4. Adaptability: Geckos change colors to blend in. How can you adapt gracefully to life’s changing environments?
  5. Contribution: Geckos keep your patio balanced. What’s one small way you can help bring balance and goodness to your world today?

Take Back Your Mind: Staying in Control of What Influences You

Your mind is your most valuable possession. Don’t give it away to negativity—learn to stay in control of what influences your thoughts and emotions.

Here’s a question for you. Do you have control of your mind or have you relinquished your control to others? The answer seems obvious, you have control of your mind. Or, do you? Are you hooked on podcasts where people throw a slanted point of view at you? Do you feel your emotions rise or fall by the information and tonality? It’s fine to listen to these things as long as we know what we’re listening to and what the speakers are trying to accomplish. Here are several questions I think that can help us: How does this podcast affect how I feel about other people? How does this podcast affect my personal emotions? When I am finished watching the podcast how do I feel on a scale of 10 where 10 is inspired, optimistic, and happy and 1 is angry, depressed, and feeling powerless. It’s not healthy to hang out on bottom part of that scale.

🌟 Critical Points to Ponder

  • Who really controls your thoughts? Are you guiding them, or are outside voices steering your emotions?
  • The emotional ripple: Does what you consume lift your spirit or pull you down the scale toward anger and despair?
  • Awareness is power: Ask yourself after each podcast, video, or show—do I feel lighter and more hopeful, or weighed down and powerless?
  • Protect your scale: Life is too short to linger in the bottom range of negativity. Consciously choose what uplifts you.
  • Optimism is practice: Taking back your mind isn’t about avoiding all media—it’s about filtering it with intention and self-respect.

🌅 When Darkness Rules, Light Waits to Return

Just as the equinox reminds us that light and dark share the stage, so too does life. Darkness may seem to win for a while, but light always returns.

The equinox is a few days away. The light and dark are nearly equal in my area. Soon, darkness will have the upper hand. It seems that life is like that and darkness has the upper hand. It doesn’t end that way. There is always a spring and light will again prevail. That’s true in nature and it’s also true in life. Stay strong during the moments of darkness. Don’t quit. Light will once again prevail in your life. You will have another springtime.

Critical Points to Ponder

  1. 🌗 Cycles are Natural: Darkness isn’t permanent—life, like the seasons, always shifts toward light again.
  2. 🌱 Strength in Waiting: What practices help you endure your own “winter” seasons until spring returns?
  3. 🔥 Resilience is Power: Even in your darkest hours, the promise of light fuels perseverance.
  4. 🌞 Hope is Practical: Hope is not naïve; it’s the seed that carries you through until renewal comes.
  5. 🌸 Your Spring Awaits: What “springtime” in your life are you longing for, and how can you prepare to embrace it fully when it arrives?

Smile ~ A Poem by Edwin Osgood Grover

Smile: The Simple Gift That Changes Everything

A smile costs nothing yet brightens the world—it is both a gift you give and a light you carry.

Smile

Edwin Osgood Grover

Smile!
The world is blue enough
Without your feeling blue.
Smile!
There’s not half joy enough
Unless you’re happy, too.
Smile!
The sun is always shining,
And there’s work to do.
Smile!
This world may not be Heaven,
But then it’s Home to you.

✨ Poignant Reflection

Sometimes the world feels heavy—headlines weigh us down, worries drain us, and the shadows of daily life seem longer than the light. Edwin Osgood Grover’s poem Smile reminds us that even in those moments, joy begins with the simple curve of our own lips. A smile is not denial of hardship; it is defiance against despair. It does not erase challenges, but it gives us the strength to face them with courage. Smiles ripple outward, softening hearts, breaking tension, and reminding us that this world, imperfect as it is, is still our shared home. To smile is to choose hope when it would be easier to frown, and that choice is one of the most powerful acts of faith in humanity.

❓ Three Questions to Go Deeper

  1. When was the last time someone’s smile changed the course of your day?
  2. How might smiling through your own struggles transform not only you, but those around you?
  3. What does it mean to you that the world “may not be Heaven, but it’s Home”?
