Today’s Poem: As One Listens to the Rain by Octavio Paz

As One Listens To The Rain

Octavio Paz

Listen to me as one listens to the rain,
not attentive, not distracted,
light footsteps, thin drizzle,
water that is air, air that is time,
the day is still leaving,
the night has yet to arrive,
figurations of mist
at the turn of the corner,
figurations of time
at the bend in this pause,
listen to me as one listens to the rain,
without listening, hear what I say
with eyes open inward, asleep
with all five senses awake,
it’s raining, light footsteps, a murmur of syllables,
air and water, words with no weight:
what we are and are,
the days and years, this moment,
weightless time and heavy sorrow,
listen to me as one listens to the rain,
wet asphalt is shining,
steam rises and walks away,
night unfolds and looks at me,
you are you and your body of steam,
you and your face of night,
you and your hair, unhurried lightning,
you cross the street and enter my forehead,
footsteps of water across my eyes,
listen to me as one listens to the rain

Inspiring Quote: Embrace Life’s Rainbows and Raindrops

Everybody wants happiness, and nobody wants pain, but you can’t have a rainbow without a little rain. ~ Zion Lee

Today’s Thought: Three Cheers for Rainy Days

I’m writing this post as a thunderstorm is rolling through. Rain is welcomed whenever it shows up in south Texas. The hot season will settle in soon and it will be dry for a while. It’s not something we give much thought to, but where would we be without rain? Life would be impossible. I’ve always liked rain. As a kid I’d run outside and splash in the puddles. I think I was more than a handful for my mom. Later in life I enjoyed running in the rain, I preferred a warm rain, but what are you going to do when you are living in a cold climate. Rain makes my grass green, my shishito pepper plants look healthy, and my flowering plants are showing off. Three cheers for rain. I think I’ll schedule this post and go outside and stand in the rain for a few minutes.

Today’s Thought: Enjoy Every Moment

I write this post on a Sunday morning. A series of thunderstorms passed through this morning bringing torrential rains with them. It was pouring rain when I parked my car in the church parking lot and headed into mass. A mom and dad and their two girls and a boy were trailing behind me as we walked through the pouring rain toward the church. I had my rainwear on. The family behind me had no rain gear. The kids were laughing and having a wonderful time walking in the downpour. I was sure they’d prefer playing in the rain instead of going into church. They made me smile and reminded me to enjoy every moment today whether it’s raining or sunny.

Rain – A Poem by Shel Silverstein

Rain

Shel Silverstein

I opened my eyes
And looked up at the rain,
And it dripped in my head
And flowed into my brain,
And all that I hear as I lie in my bed
Is the slishity-slosh of the rain in my head.

I step very softly,
I walk very slow,
I can’t do a handstand–
I might overflow,
So pardon the wild crazy thing I just said–
I’m just not the same since there’s rain in my head.

Poem for Today ~ Rainfall

Rainfall

Emily Pauline Johnson

From out the west, where darkling storm-clouds float,
The ’waking wind pipes soft its rising note.

From out the west, o’erhung with fringes grey,
The wind preludes with sighs its roundelay,

Then blowing, singing, piping, laughing loud,
It scurries on before the grey storm-cloud;

Across the hollow and along the hill
It whips and whirls among the maples, till

With boughs upbent, and green of leaves blown wide,
The silver shines upon their underside.

A gusty freshening of humid air,
With showers laden, and with fragrance rare;

And now a little sprinkle, with a dash
Of great cool drops that fall with sudden splash;

Then over field and hollow, grass and grain,
The loud, crisp whiteness of the nearing rain.

Optimism Works ~ Optimists Keep Looking for a Way Through

Optimists Makes the Best of Circumstances

Being optimistic isn’t being foolhardy.Optimists make the best out of situations. If, for example, one is planning an outdoor party, optimism isn’t going to stop the rain. The optimist will know the rain is a disappointment. Instead of bemoaning the nasty weather, the optimist will ask, “How can we make the party work?” They’ll find a way.

A Better Life ~ Enjoy the Day

It’s pouring rain at the moment in south Texas as I write this post (It’s a Saturday). It’s a cold, raw rain. I love it. We need rain. I got wet getting gasoline for my car and walking into the market. I didn’t run into the market, I took my time enjoying the rain hitting my face and head. I’ll brew myself hot tea, settle in to watch football. It’s as good as it gets. I may even pop a big batch of popcorn.

Something to Think About

A cold front came through south Texas announced by thunderstorms bringing much needed rain. When it rains in south Texas, the rain is often torrential and heavy, pouring water on the ground in a brief time. One has to be careful of flash flooding from dry creek beds that quickly overflow and flood roadways. Life’s a lot like the Texas rains. We’re riding along on a high, then boom, torrential rains. We’re not alone when this happens. It happens to everyone. What do we do when the rains hit? Walk on through the rain. The storms will end. A rainbow will appear.
