Feel Good Tip ~ Smile, You’ll Be Happier

There is a Link Between Smiling and Happiness

“It may seem obvious that smiling, the outward expression of happiness, makes us feel happy but what does the science say? The definitive answer came in in 2019 when researchers from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville decided to look back at 138 studies carried out around the world involving more than 11,000 volunteers and covering a period of 50 years. They concluded that our facial expressions do indeed impact our mood and our emotions: frowning makes us feel sadder, scowling makes us feel angrier and smiling makes us happier. As the researchers pointed out this doesn’t mean we can literally smile our way to happiness, but it is evidence that our minds and bodies are intimately linked when we experience emotions. ” Source

NOTE: I don’t see many happy people. I go to the supermarket, few people smile. I sit in a coffee shop and see young people smiling much more than older people. I go to the gym, same thing. When I see someone smiling, it makes me smile. I also notice that when I smile at another, I usually get a smile in return. Smile and remind folks that smiling makes us feel better. You’ll be doing them a favor.

Feeling Good Tip of the Day ~ This Will Make You Feel Happier

SURPRISE: Smiling Will Make You Feel Happier

It might come as no surprise that smiling can make you feel happier. But the important thing here is that the smile must be sincere, it can’t be faked. If you fake it, you might even make yourself more unhappy, according to a 2011 study

The study examined a group of city bus drivers over a period of two weeks. They found that employees who put on a fake smile for the job were in a worse mood by the end of the day compared to when their shift began. But drivers who genuinely smiles as a result of positive thoughts actually had a better mood by the end of the day. So when you smile, make sure to smile like you mean it!

🤗 Feel Good Hack ~ You Can Do It ~ Smile

Make Cheerfulness Your Default Demeanor

There are plenty of old songs that encourage us to “put on a happy face” or “smile when your heart is breaking,” or “don’t worry, be happy.” Many of us may feel a little confused about why we are always encouraging people to “lie” to themselves.

Actually, there is a Zen koan or saying that states simply, “Practice smiling while peeling carrots.” My yoga instructor always encourages us to smile during the most difficult poses. She asks the question, “Are you smiling because you are happy or are you happy because you are smiling?”
