Something to Think About

It doesn’t matter if we make it over the finish line first if there is no one there to congratulate us. We make it together. In making it together we all have a piece of the action, we are all a part of the reason to celebrate.

At the moment it is 100 degrees and expected to rise to 104 degrees F (37.7 to 40 Celsius). There’s not much I can do about it. I’ve got to roll with it. I’ll probably be wishing for this day in January. It’s another life lesson taught to us by nature. When we can’t do anything about it, it’s best to adapt, adjust, and roll with it. I think I’ll have a tall glass iced tea, pick up a good book, and salute the sun.

Mark Twain said, “If you don’t read the newspaper, you’re uninformed. If you read the newspaper, you’re mis-informed.” What he said many years ago applies to all news sources today, digital and printed. Because someone said it, doesn’t make it true. If it’s important, verify the information. Where does the weight of evidence lie? The evidence may not be where we want it to be, failure to listen to the weight of the evidence makes us pawns of the person who makes the false statements.

If you’re unhappy where you are, chances are you’ll be unhappy wherever you go. It’s a fact. Happiness comes from within. Often times it’s a matter of changing an attitude toward what’s in front of us. We may be unhappy at work, yet, if we were watching our worksite on reality TV we might be laughing. This morning a country western song (is there any other type of song in Texas? LOL) where the singer spoke about a baby boy crying with a fury showing he was ready to take on the world. Happiness comes from within and is filtered through our attitudes and the way we look at world. If you’re happy now, chances you’ll be happy tomorrow.

Each day is an open book. We may have plans, checklists, and goals set for the day. Sometimes, the day listens to us and lets us think we’re in control. Other times, the day laughs at us and lets us know we were never in charge. Our day is filled with interruptions, unexpected events, and all sorts of upheaval. However our day plays out, we can make the most of every moment whether we intended the moment or not.

One of my earliest memories is my mom taking me to library and getting me a library card. I’ve been a friend of libraries and books since that moment. I read for ideas, knowledge, and entertainment. The more I read, the more I learn about others and myself. I have my favorite genres and authors. I’m always on the hunt for something new. The more we read, the more we become connected and the more we have our set ways of thinking challenged.

Some days the journey seems as if it will never end. There is no oasis in sight. We struggle to keep moving. Voices inside our brain scream at us to stop, give up. Don’t listen to the voices. Keep walking. Keep moving ahead. You never know what’s around the next turn.  If we stop, we’ll never know what’s around the next turn. Keep walking

Life seems to continually offer us a choice, give up or keep on going. There is no place to hide from life’s choice. Life seeks us out and asks, do you have the courage to keep fighting? Do you have the courage to push on through the pain? Do you have the courage to face another sunrise. When we say yes, yes, and yes, life smiles on us and we get a respite in a springtime mountain valley.  Don’t quit. Don’t ever give up.

A Better Life ~ Trust Yourself

Don’t let criticism knock you down. Similarly, don’t let praise inflate your ego. When we take another’s criticism or praise too seriously we cede control to that person. When we cede control, we exchange our creative spirit for another’s direction. Be yourself. Trust yourself.

What is happiness for you? I’ve heard folks say if they hit the lottery they’d be happy. Research proves that money doesn’t make us happy. What makes you happy? I can answer for myself. I am happy when I get off a plane and find family waiting for me with waving arms and shouts of joy. I am happy when I sit alone and feel as if God is sitting next to me. I know it’s a moment of grace. I am happy when I am with people who love me. I am happy when I see the hummingbirds fitting around the yard. I am happy when a neighbor calls out my name and says, “How you doing, Ray?” These are a few of the things that make me happy. What about You?
