Today’s Reflection: A Great Dream

I have a dream that I will fulfill. And nothing else will distract me from my path. Lu Xun

Happiness ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

Happiness

Ralph Waldo Emerson

Are you seeking for greatness, O brother of mine,
As the full, fleeting seasons and years glide away?
If seeking directly and for self alone,
The true and abiding you never can stay.
But all self forgetting, know well the law,
It's the hero, and not the self-seeker, who's crowned.
Then go lose your life in the service of others,
And, lo! with rare greatness and glory 'twill abound.

Today’s Reflection: You Have a Gift

You would not exist if you did not have something to bring to the table of life. ~ Herbie Hancock

Today’s Reflection: Time to Act

So plant your own gardens and decorate your own soul, instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers. ~ Jorge Luis Borges

Today’s Reflection ~ Take a Chance

Who dares nothing, need hope for nothing. ~ Friedrich Schiller

Today’s Reflection ~ 20/20 Vision

A great man is hard on himself; a small man is hard on others. Confucius

Today’s Reflection ~ Path to Success

The idea that the harder you work, the better you’re going to be is just garbage. The greatest improvement is made by the man or woman who works most intelligently. ~ Bob Bowerman

It Might Have Been ~ Ella Wheeler Wilcox

It Might Have Been

Ella Wheeler Wilcox

We will be what we could be. Do not say,
    "It might have been, had not or that, or this."
No fate can keep us from the chosen way;
    He only might who is.

We will do what we could do. Do not dream
    Chance leaves a hero, all uncrowned to grieve.
I hold, all men are greatly what they seem;
    He does who could achieve.

We will climb where we could climb. Tell me not
    Of adverse storms that kept thee from the height.
What eagle ever missed the peak he sought?
    He always climbs who might.

I do not like the phrase, "It might have been!"
    It lacks all force, and life's best truths perverts:
For I believe we have, and reach, and win,
    Whatever our deserts.

The Kingdom of Man ~ John Kendrick Bangs

What of the outer drear,

As long as there’s inner light;

As long as the sun of cheer

Shines ardently bright?

As long as the soul’s a-wing,

As long as the heart is true,

What power hath trouble to bring

A sorrow to you?

No bar can encage the soul,

Nor capture the spirit free,

As long as old earth shall roll,

Or hours shall be.

Our world is the world within,

Our life is the thought we take,

And never an outer sin

Can mar it or break.

Brood not on the rich man’s land,

Sigh not for miser’s gold,

Holding in reach of your hand

The treasure untold

That lies in the Mines of Heart,

That rests in the soul alone—

Bid worry and care depart,

Come into your own!

John Kendrick Bangs

On Quitting ~ Edgar Guest

How much grit do you think you’ve got?
Can you quit a thing that you like a lot?
You may talk of pluck; it’s an easy word,
And where’er you go it is often heard;
But can you tell to a jot or guess
Just how much courage you now possess?
You may stand to trouble and keep your grin,
But have you tackled self-discipline?
Have you ever issued commands to you
To quit the things that you like to do,
And then, when tempted and sorely swayed,
Those rigid orders have you obeyed?

Don’t boast of your grit till you’ve tried it out,
Nor prate to men of your courage stout,
For it’s easy enough to retain a grin
In the face of a fight there’s a chance to win,
But the sort of grit that is good to own
Is the stuff you need when you’re all alone.
How much grit do you think you’ve got?
Can you turn from joys that you like a lot?
Have you ever tested yourself to know
How far with yourself your will can go?
If you want to know if you have grit,
Just pick out a joy that you like, and quit.

It’s bully sport and it’s open fight;
It will keep you busy both day and night;
For the toughest kind of a game you’ll find
Is to make your body obey your mind.
And you never will know what is meant by grit
Unless there’s something you’ve tried to quit.
