Texas
Six Flags Over Texas… or Seven? Wait, Was France Just Passing Through?
Hold on for 8 cowboy! If you think Texas history is just cowboys and barbecue, think again—this land has had more passports than a globe-trotting rodeo clown.
So next time someone says Texas is “just” a state, hit ’em with some sass and a side of historical swagger. History’s wild, y’all—and Texas has been making it in boots since 1519.
From Drought to Downpour: Holding On Through Life’s Dry Seasons
Since August, we’ve had just over 5 inches of rain. That’s not just weather—it’s a mirror of what life feels like sometimes. It is the third lowest rain total for that period since readings have been recorded. No question, we are in a severe drought. One day the drought will end and in Texas style we will get an over abundance of rain in a brief period. It’s a good metaphor for life. Each of us goes through drought periods where we wonder if anything good will come our way again. Sometimes our droughts can appear to be endless. Hang in there, your drought, like my South Texas drought, will end. Maybe you’ll have a Texas sized downpour of good news coming at you all at once. Never quit.
It’s So Hot That . . . A Daughter and Dad Podcast
Enjoy the latest Daughter and Dad podcast where Pru and I talk about how hot it is in Texas and New Mexico and anything else that comes to mind.
Today’s Thought: A Handshake and Trust
I had a true old-fashioned Texas experience yesterday. I had my roof inspected for hail damage. The roofer and I had a lengthy talk about what had to be done, how it would be done, the estimated cost, and the process of submitting a claim to my insurance company. We agreed if the insurance company approves the claim the roofer will take care of the repairs. We shook hands. My handshake meant I won’t run around seeking to find someone else who will do the work cheaper. I trust the roofer to do the job correctly (I did do my research before he visited). I know he trusted me to follow through on my promise to use his company. That’s old school, a handshake and the trust that goes with it. It would be nice if more of it happened.

Feel Good Tip for Today ~ Iced Tea on a Hot Day
![]()
A quintessential refreshing drink on a hot day in south Texas is a large (and I mean Texas sized large) glass of iced tea. Close the laptop, put the smart phone on silent, pour yourself a large glass of cold iced tea. Take it outside, sit down, and let the world pass by for twenty minutes. Enjoy every savory moment. You’ll go back to whatever it was you were working on and being refreshed. Cheers. pardner!
Feel Good Tip for Today ~ Strawberries and Feeling Good
![]()
Fresh strawberries abound in south Texas. Want a feel good moment? Get a box of fresh strawberries (tip: smell them, if they have a strawberry fragrance, they’re ready for your palate) wash them, and fill a small bowl. Find a quiet space, sit down and savor each bite. You’ll come away feeling refreshed. It’s the small things that bring the happiest moments.
What If . . .
What if I won the lottery? How many folks have thought about that question? It’s why state sponsored lotteries are big money makers. They operate successfully on our dreams. Yet, the chances of winning the top prize in the lottery are slim. One time I was traveling and the woman sitting next to me on the flight told me her husband won the Texas state lottery for twenty million dollars. He died shortly after that and now she was traveling to all the places they talked about seeing. I wondered if it were possible, would she exchange the twenty million for the life of her husband. The bible offers this advice, “where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Where is your treasure (lottery)?
