Develop good social ties with a healthy community. The first tip is most important because it helps with the others. Are you close with an extended healthy family, or with a volunteer social group or prosocial religious community? Do you have a worthwhile career or positive educational endeavor? Great. ~ Howard S. Friedman

How to Head Off a Headache
Start double-fisting beverages the minute the throbbing begins. “I’ll have a bottle of water in one hand and a coffee in the other,” says Jennifer Ashton, MD, author of Your Body Beautiful and cohost of ABC’s The Revolution. That’s because many headaches are caused by dehydration, while caffeine is known to curb them. If the drinks don’t alleviate the pounding in an hour, she pops ibuprofen.

Writer’s Wisdom ~ Zadie Smith on ‘What Matters’
Don’t romanticise your ‘vocation.’ You can either write good sentences or you can’t. There is no ‘writer’s lifestyle.’ All that matters is what you leave on the page. ~ Zadie Smith
Joy and Sorrow ~ Gibran
Your joy is your sorrow unmasked.
And the selfsame well from which your laughter rises was often times filled with your tears.
And how else can it be?
The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain.
Is not the cup that holds your wine the very cup that was burned in the potter’s oven?
And is not the lute that soothes your spirit, the very wood that was hollowed with knives?
When you are joyous, look deep into your heart and you shall find it is only that which has given you sorrow that is giving you joy.
When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight.
Some of you say, “Joy is greater than sorrow,” and others say, “Nay, sorrow is the greater.”
But I say unto you, they are inseparable.
Together they come, and when one sits, alone with you at your board, remember that the other is asleep upon your bed.
Verily you are suspended like scales between your sorrow and your joy.
Only when you are empty are you at standstill and balanced.
When the treasure-keeper lifts you to weigh his gold and his silver, needs must your joy or your sorrow rise or fall.
Today’s Reflection ~ Love
If we love one another, nothing, in truth, can harm us, whatever mischances may happen. ~ Longfellow
Longevity Tip
Rafaella Monne, a 107-year-old from Sardinia said it best: “Life is short. Don’t run so fast you miss it.” Slowing life’s pace may help keep inflammation in check, and apart from its health benefits, it adds richness to life.

Forgive Yourself
If you slip up on vacation and overeat, drink too much, or fail to exercise — forgive yourself. Don’t beat yourself up! Instead, say, “I really enjoyed my vacation,” and let it go at that. Allowing yourself time to enjoy a few indulgences occasionally is OK. If you start to feel guilty for having dessert on a special night out, forgive yourself and start back on your more disciplined program the next day.

Writer’s Wisdom ~ Zadie Smith on Reading
When still a child, make sure you read a lot of books. Spend more time doing this than anything else.
When an adult, try to read your own work as a stranger would read it, or even better, as an enemy would.
Joy ~ Buddha
Let us live in joy, not hating those who hate us.
Among those who hate us, we live free of hate.
Let us live in joy,
free from disease among those who are diseased.
Among those who are diseased, let us live free of disease.
Let us live in joy, free from greed among the greedy.
Among those who are greedy, we live free of greed.
Let us live in joy, though we possess nothing.
Let us live feeding on joy, like the bright gods.
