Healthy Tips: The Art of the Pivot: From ‘I Can’t Make It’ to ‘Let’s Do Coffee’
Saying “no” to the group dinner doesn’t mean you’re exiled from the kingdom.
Tip: The secret weapon? Replacing guilt with a future plan. Say, “I can’t make it, but I’d love to catch up one-on-one soon—coffee’s on me.” Relationships thrive when you swap one connection for a more meaningful one.
Grounds for Confusion: One Man’s Quest to Brew Coffee Without Triggering National Security
You know that sacred moment when your soul whispers, “Just give me caffeine before I make decisions”? Yeah… this isn’t that story.
II brewed my morning coffee with my trusty Keurig—clean, quick, easy, and efficient, just like a ninja with a caffeine addiction. But then I had a wild thought: What if… I wanted more than one cup? I dusted off the guest-only coffee maker like it was an ancient artifact from the Temple of Java and gave it a fresh start. Cleaned it. Filtered it. Loved it.
All I needed? Ground coffee. Simple, right?
Enter: The supermarket. I spotted a coupon like a caffeinated mirage—$1 off Starbucks bags. Boom. Scanned. Grabbed the Espresso Roast. Victory lap to the checkout.
The next morning, post-stretch and still in my “zen master of mornings” mode, I prepped my majestic brewing station. Water? ✅ Filter? ✅ Coffee? OPEN THE BAG…
Whole. Beans.
My jaw dropped. My soul whimpered. I don’t own a grinder. My life turned into a slow-motion horror movie. Back to the Keurig. Back to single-serve reality.
But I’m not one to be defeated by legumes in disguise. I returned to the scene of the grind. Coffee bag in hand. Receipt ready. Hope in my heart.
Then came the clerk, clearly moonlighting as a TSA trainee.
“It’s been opened.”
(Ah yes, I sampled the beans… by looking at them.)
I went into “zen warrior” mode: Silent. Calm. Slight shrug.
She said, “Sorry, we can’t do an exchange.”
I said, “What can we do?”
She blinked like I’d asked her to solve world peace using a French press.
A puzzled look crossed the clerk’s face. I stayed silent. I don’t think the clerk studied FAQ’s about my question. I channeled my inner Zen warrior, smiled, titlted my head, and mentally walked through a meadow filled with daisies.
The clerk looked at the coffee bag and said, “I’ll have to speak to my manager.
For the next five minutes I checked texts, emails, ball scores, and photos. The clerk returned, “The manager said, this time we’ll let you exchange it, but we can’t do it again.”
Will I sleep tonight? Probably not.
Was it worth it? Absolutely.
Zen and the Art of Avocado Maintenance (Or How Guacamole Nearly Ruined My Day)
I’m usually a very happy guy. Don’t need drugs or alcohol. Waking up, feeling good, and a hot cup of Joe waiting for me does the trick. Drivers can pass me by, I’ll catch them at the next light. If Starbucks is out of Italian roast, not a problem, I’ll have theVerona. If I get the itch to have a pumpernickel bagel and the bagel shop is all out. Perfect, I’ll have a sesame seed bagel toasted with veggie cream cheese. I draw the line when it comes to picking out avocados at the local market. I don’t have the patience to wait for avocados that are hard as a rock to ripen. It’s even worse if they are too ripe and i give them a squeeze and feel my fingers breaking the skin. What really sets me off is when I find the perfect avocado and my mind instantly creates an image of the best guacamole a human being can make. I get home, rinse off the avocado’s skin, place it on my cutting board. I make my incision as careful as a heart surgeon. When I open it up, I don’t see any green, only gray, gray and darker gray. I count to ten. Not helping. I picture a peaceful lake, still no progress. A little angel whispers in my ear, “Chill out, Ray. Head over to the closest Mexican restaurant. They’re the pros. I’m not cooking tonight. I’ve got tacos and guac in my future.
Health Tip: 🥦 “Broccoli & Mustard: The Unexpected Power Couple (Sorry, Coffee & Iron, You’re Toxic)” ☕️
One duo fights cancer… the other just fights each other.
Some food combos are like a buddy cop movie — unlikely at first glance, but together they save the day. Others? Well, they seem promising but end up undermining each other like rival reality show contestants. Today, we celebrate one dynamic health-boosting pair… and expose another that seriously needs a timeout.
✅ Power Couple: Broccoli + Mustard
Broccoli comes in with sulforaphane — a mighty compound known to fight inflammation and even reduce cancer risk. But it needs a little help from its friend myrosinase (an enzyme), which mustard conveniently brings to the picnic. Together, they make a cancer-fighting combo that deserves its own superhero movie.
Try it: Steam your broccoli lightly and drizzle it with a bit of spicy mustard or mix it into a mustard vinaigrette. Boom — science on a fork.
🚫 Troubled Duo: Iron Supplements + Coffee or Tea
We know — coffee goes with everything, right? Well… not iron. The polyphenols and tannins in your morning cup of Joe (or tea) reduce iron absorption by up to 60–90%. That means your body’s not cashing in on that supplement you so nobly remembered to take.
The fix: Take your iron with water and vitamin C-rich foods (like an orange), and save the coffee for at least an hour later. Your bloodstream will thank you.
Final Thought:
Some food relationships are chemistry in action. Others? Just bad first dates over and over. Stick with the combos that lift each other up — and kindly ask your coffee to wait its turn.
Healthy Tips: Little Things Make a Difference in Mood
Incorporate simple pleasures. Your routine should include things that make you happy – a cup of tea, a scented candle, background music. Little pleasures can relax you and improve your mood.
Note: I enjoy the first sip of coffee each morning. I’ve got in the habit of becoming aware of all of the flavors in the coffee. That first sip announces to my brain, “Ray, you’re going to have a great day!” Try it.
Healthy Tips: Morning Rituals
Create a morning ritual to start the day calmly.
What is your morning ritual? Do you have a ritual that will get you centered and focused on the day ahead? I’ve developed a routine that works for me. When I wake up I begin by thanking God for a new day, the gift of health, the gifts of my daughters, neighbors, and friends. I then pray traditional prayers that have been part of my life since childhood. I pray for my daughters, those I’ll meet today, for my country and church, for peace, and for the souls of my wife, parents, and those who have touched my life. I get out of bed announcing, “I’m going to have a great day.” I do a series of yoga stretches, the plank, and pushups. I turn the coffee on so it will be ready when I finishes showering and dressing. I drink a warm tall glass of lemon water and it’s off to the shower. By the time I am sitting down with my coffee, oatmeal, and blueberries, I am fired up and ready to take on the day. Impossible to miss having a great day.
It’s All a Gift
A few things to never take for granted: One’s life. A partner’s love. Good health. A faithful friend. Any meal. A bird’s song. Springtime. And, a hot cup of coffee. Everything is a gift.
I Love My Morning Coffee
I enjoy my morning coffee. I smell it brewing while I’m in the shower. My anticipation grows as I shave. The fragrance of my coffee is a signal to my brain that today is going to be a good day. I walk into the kitchen area, I stare at my coffee pot. I resist the temptation to pour a small cup. I make toast and spread peanut butter and honey on it. I carry my toast to my table and set it next to my blueberries and yogurt. I walk to the coffee maker. I lift the pot out and slowly pour the coffee into my mug. I raise the mug to my face and let the fragrance do the rest. I take a sip. Yes, this is good. It’s smooth, rich, and I taste the flavor of the cocoa beans. I sit down, give thanks for my coffee and food, and enjoy my breakfast. Life is good.
Get That Peaceful Easy Feeling
How is your day going? I’m off to a great start. I am writing this post before I head to the gym. It’s early morning. I’ve done my stretching, child pose and sleeping baby. I did the plank, full bridges and one legged bridges. I showered and dressed for the gym. I made coffee, ate oatmeal and a side dish of blueberries, I made oatmeal yesterday and put it in two bowls in the fridge (I really like cold oatmeal with cinnamon and drizzled honey). Now I working on my blog. I am grateful for a good night’s sleep, a hot shower, being able to exercise (I find great joy in exercising), my hot coffee and oatmeal. I’m grateful for this blog and for those who read it. When I take the time to be grateful, I feel a peaceful easy feeling covering me. It’s a good space to be in. I agree with William Arthur Ward who wrote, “Gratitude can transform common days into thanksgivings, turn routine jobs into joy, and change ordinary opportunities into blessings.
