She clipped the cartoon and had it framed. I still have that small framed cartoon sitting across my study from me in my bookcase. In the cartoon, a professor wants to buy an a first class airplane ticket. The counter clerk says, “I’m sorry, first class is reserved for those who’ve published 3 books.” At that time, I’d only published articles, I didn’t have a single book contract on the horizon. My wife said to me, “Ray, go first class.” I became obsessed with my pursuit and published ten academic books. All because of a cartoon and someone who believed in me. Shine on. You are on your way.
