Today’s Power Thought ~ Let Them Slip Away

Don’t allow minor annoyances to get in the way of a great relationship. They’ll disappear like the morning dew when no attention is given to them, Most annoyances are simply slight differences in the way we view of do things. One is neither better or worse than the other.

Today’s Inspiration ~ Every Day is the Best Day

Every day is a renewal, every morning the daily miracle. This joy you feel is life.

~ Gertrude Stein

Something to Think About

This past week I was in a group meeting. Each member of the group was shared personal stories. A member told story where he was caught in a major explosions and it left him suffering from  PTSD. His description of what he experienced touched everyone who was listening to his story. Two members of the group  interrupted him toward the end of his story. They asked questions and offered suggestions on what he could do. He stopped talking, folded his arms across his chest and nodded. They were trying to fix him and give him a solution. He wanted people to hear his story and understand his suffering. Sometimes it’s better to listen than to offer suggestions.

Today’s Health Tip ~ Why You Should be Using Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Extra-Virgin Olive Oil Wraps You in a Health Shield

The antioxidants in olive oil may help protect the body from cellular damage that can lead to a range of health conditions and diseases. Extra virgin olive oil has a bitter flavor, but it contains more antioxidants than other types, as it undergoes the least processing.

  1. Olive oil is the main source of fat in the Mediterranean diet. People who consume this diet appear to have a higher life expectancy, including a lower chance of dying from cardiovascular diseases, compared with people who follow other diets. Some experts call it “the standard in preventive medicine.”
  2. According to research published in 2019, olive oil contains substances that may help prevent colorectal cancer. Lab tests have found evidence that antioxidants in olive oil may help protect the body from inflammation, oxidative damage, and epigenetic changes.
  3. In 2016, some scientists suggested that including extra virgin olive oil in the diet may help prevent Alzheimer’s disease. This may be due to its protective impact on blood vessels in the brain.
  4. Olive oil acts as an antioxidant, which is a substance that prevents oxidation. Oxidation is a process that can produce free radicals, which are chemicals that can potentially damage cells and may contribute to cancer development. When applied to the skin, antioxidants may prevent premature aging.

A Better Life ~ Learning a Second Language

Although my primary language is English, I make an effort each day to learn to speak Spanish. I’m making progress, but it is slow. I like speaking (albeit poorly) Spanish with the Spanish speaking people I meet. One language I have not had to learn to communicate is a smile. A warm, broad smile is always reciprocated. It is a universal sign that the world is a friendly place. You don’t have to learn a second language to communicate, all you have to do is offer your beautiful smile to all who pass your way.

Today’s Smile

Joe “My boss came in early and found me kissing his secretary. He hollered, “Is this why I pay you?”

Pete: “What did you say?”

Joe “I said, “No, sir. I do it free of charge.”

Today’s Good Word ~ What’s Right?

How often do we ask ourselves ‘what’s right’ in this situation? When we ask ourselves ‘what’s right’ in a situation we ask ourselves to make a judgement based on our value system. If we don’t have a value system, we have no gauge to determine what is right is a situation. We make judgements based on feelings with no substance to support our feelings. Having value-based support for what is right is important in times when our values system does not conform with popular opinion. When we do what is right based on our value system we can live with ourselves. We have integrity. What we decide to do may not be popular but it defines us and our values.

Today’s Poem ~ The Best Friend

The Best Friend
William Henry Davies
Now shall I walk
Or shall I ride?
“Ride”, Pleasure said;
“Walk”, Joy replied.

Now what shall I —
Stay home or roam?
“Roam”, Pleasure said;
And Joy — “stay home.”

Now shall I dance,
Or sit for dreams?
“Sit,” answers Joy;
“Dance,” Pleasure screams.

Which of ye two
Will kindest be?
Pleasure laughed sweet,
But Joy kissed me.

Today’s Power Thought ~ Directing Our Anger

Angry? It’s a normal human emotion. It’s better to direct our anger toward problems where we work to develop successful solutions. Anger toward people creates defensiveness and is often counter productive.

Today’s Health Tip ~ Why you should eat Brazil Nuts

Here are the Health Benefits of Brazil Nuts

Brazil nuts are high in selenium, which is a trace mineral vital for proper body function. Selenium ensures a healthy thyroid and helps to keep your immune system functioning at its best. Higher levels of selenium can help strengthen your immune system and improve your outcomes with various health conditions, such as cancer, heart disease, infections, and infertility. Eating just two Brazil nuts a day can help to maintain or increase your selenium intake as effectively as a supplement.

Reduced Risk of Heart Disease – Brazil nuts contain high levels of monounsaturated fats, which are healthy fats. Incorporating monounsaturated fat into your diet can help to improve your cholesterol levels, which can reduce your risk of heart disease. The dietary fiber in Brazil nuts can also help to lower blood cholesterol levels, reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Thyroid health – Selenium is necessary for healthy thyroid function. Getting enough selenium in your diet can help to reduce your risk of Hashimoto’s disease, Graves’ disease, and thyroid cancer.

Inflammation Relief – Brazil nuts have several antioxidants, including vitamin E and phenols. Antioxidants can help to fight free radicals, reducing oxidative stress and inflammation in your body. Lowering inflammation can help to reduce your risk of various health conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes, and certain types of cancer.

Bone Health – Brazil nuts have calcium and magnesium, both of which are necessary for bone health. A 1-ounce serving of Brazil nuts has about 25% to 33% of your recommended daily dose of magnesium, which plays an important role in bone density. More magnesium can lead to higher bone density.

Brain Health – Low levels of selenium are linked to neurodegenerative conditions such as Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease. The antioxidants in Brazil nuts, including selenium, can help to boost your brain health. Some research also shows that increasing your selenium intake can help to improve your mood.
