Great Healthy Tips: Getting to a Healthy Weight

Maintain a healthy weight to lower risks of chronic diseases.

It’s important to maintain a healthy weight. When you factor in stress and multiple other factors it can be tough. Here’s what I do to maintain a healthy weight. I exercise. I’ve always loved exercising. I’ve found, for me, I have to go at least 45 minutes for it to make a difference in my calorie burn. I also cut out all white bread in favor of whole grain and seeded bread. I live in south Texas so you know tortillas are part of our lifestyle. I found a tortilla brand, Ole, that uses flax seed in their tortillas, they’re low in calories (70) and no bad fats. They’re my go-to at lunch. I don’t eat sugary sweets, red meats, or deep fried foods. I eat heaps of veggies, fruit, and salmon three days a week. I make my own refried beans to put in my tortillas. I will have a chicken/broccoli stir fry a couple of times a week. Got to get enough protein. C’mon, you can do it. Get to a healthy weight with just a few modifications.

It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas

A bit over a week until Christmas. The front desk person at the gym was wearing a Santa hat yesterday. When I saw her I said, “Santa, I’ve been a good boy, but don’t ask my mom.” We had a laugh over that one. I enjoy the holiday season. My tree is up (it’s artificial). I strung lights around it and have a few decorations on it. I light it the first thing in the morning and it stays lit until I go to bed. I have a manger scene underneath. The three wise men on their camels are off a bit. I like to move them a little closer to the manger each day. Nearby on a stool is a stuffed white whiskered old cowboy, hat, red bandana, boots and all. I call him Windy Bill after a character in a western Christmas song. He keeps a eye on the tree. While I’m cooking dinner I stream Christmas music. I pretty much like them all. I don’t play Blue Christmas. That’s a road I don’t want to walk down. Hope you’re enjoying the season as much as me.

We Have a Choice

Acceptance ~ A Poem by Robert Frost

Acceptance

Robert Frost

When the spent sun throws up its rays on cloud
And goes down burning into the gulf below,
No voice in nature is heard to cry aloud
At what has happened. Birds, at least must know
It is the change to darkness in the sky.
Murmuring something quiet in her breast,
One bird begins to close a faded eye;
Or overtaken too far from his nest,
Hurrying low above the grove, some waif
Swoops just in time to his remembered tree.
At most he thinks or twitters softly, ‘Safe!
Now let the night be dark for all of me.
Let the night be too dark for me to see
Into the future. Let what will be, be.’

Healthy Foods & Recipes: Carrots

Four Healthy Reasons to Include Carrots in Your Diet

  1. Rich in Antioxidants (Beta-Carotene)
    • Carrots are one of the best natural sources of beta-carotene, a powerful antioxidant that your body converts into vitamin A. Vitamin A supports eye health, improves night vision, and boosts immune function.
    • Benefit: Reduces the risk of macular degeneration, supports healthy skin, and enhances immune response.
  2. Promotes Heart Health
    • Carrots are high in dietary fiber, potassium, and antioxidants, all of which contribute to a healthy heart. Potassium helps regulate blood pressure, while fiber helps reduce cholesterol.
    • Benefit: Lowers cholesterol, stabilizes blood pressure, and reduces the risk of heart disease.
  3. Supports Digestive Health
    • The high fiber content in carrots promotes gut health and prevents constipation by supporting regular bowel movements.
    • Benefit: Promotes healthy digestion and reduces the risk of gastrointestinal issues like constipation and bloating.
  4. Boosts Skin Health and Wound Healing
    • Carrots contain vitamin C, which promotes the production of collagen — a protein that keeps skin firm and elastic. Vitamin C also aids in wound healing.
    • Benefit: Enhances skin’s natural glow, supports faster wound healing, and reduces the effects of aging on the skin.

Get Healthy Tip: Annual Checkups

Great Healthy Tip

Regular check-ups can detect health issues early.

It’s a pain in the butt to go for the check ups. You make an appointment for 9 a.m. and it’s 10 a.m. by the time the doctor sees you. You’ve probably been fasting overnight so you can get your bloodwork done. You’re hungry and getting cranky. Here’s the deal. We got to do it. That’s what intelligent people do. They get regular eye, dental, and physical health checkups. You’re an intelligent woman and man. Make the call or do it online. Get scheduled. You’re doing it for yourself and all those who love you.

I Love My Morning Coffee

I enjoy my morning coffee. I smell it brewing while I’m in the shower. My anticipation grows as I shave. The fragrance of my coffee is a signal to my brain that today is going to be a good day. I walk into the kitchen area, I stare at my coffee pot. I resist the temptation to pour a small cup. I make toast and spread peanut butter and honey on it. I carry my toast to my table and set it next to my blueberries and yogurt. I walk to the coffee maker. I lift the pot out and slowly pour the coffee into my mug. I raise the mug to my face and let the fragrance do the rest. I take a sip. Yes, this is good. It’s smooth, rich, and I taste the flavor of the cocoa beans. I sit down, give thanks for my coffee and food, and enjoy my breakfast. Life is good.
