Brimming Water ~ A Poem by Du Fu

Brimming Water

Du Fu

Under my feet the moon
Glides along the river.
Near midnight, a gusty lantern
Shines in the heart of night.
Along the sandbars flocks
Of white egrets roost,
Each one clenched like a fist.
In the wake of my barge
The fish leap, cut the water,
And dive and splash.

Podcast: The Power of Perception: Transforming Suffering into Healing

In this episode of Journey from Grief to Healing, Dr. Ray Calabrese explores the transformative power of perception in our experience of suffering. Drawing wisdom from Marcel Proust, Wayne Dyer, Viktor Frankl, and Kahlil Gibran, he uncovers how acceptance, rather than resistance, can help us move through grief. Through powerful metaphors—like the inevitability of the tide washing away sandcastles—Dr. Calabrese invites listeners to see suffering not as something to escape, but as a teacher that shapes us. If you’ve ever wondered how to navigate grief in a way that brings understanding and healing, this episode is for you.

Healthy Foods & Recipes: Salmon (Spicy Salmon Tacos with Avocado Slaw)

Four Health Benefits of Eating Salmon

  1. Rich in Omega-3 Fatty Acids
    • Salmon is one of the best sources of EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), which reduce inflammation, lower blood pressure, and support brain and heart health.
  2. High-Quality Protein
    • A single serving of salmon provides about 22-25 grams of protein, essential for muscle maintenance, metabolism, and tissue repair.
  3. Great for Brain Health
    • The B vitamins (B6, B12, niacin) and omega-3s in salmon help improve cognitive function, lower the risk of neurodegenerative diseases, and support mental well-being.
  4. Supports Heart Health
    • Regular consumption of salmon has been linked to a lower risk of heart disease by improving cholesterol levels, reducing triglycerides, and maintaining healthy blood pressure.

Cautions of Eating Farmed Salmon

While farmed salmon is more affordable and accessible, there are some concerns to be aware of:

  • Higher Contaminant Levels
    • Farmed salmon may contain higher levels of PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) and dioxins, which are environmental pollutants.
  • Antibiotic and Pesticide Use
    • Some farmed salmon operations use antibiotics and chemicals to prevent disease, which can contribute to antibiotic resistance and environmental pollution.
  • Lower Omega-3 Content
    • Depending on their diet, farmed salmon may have lower omega-3 levels compared to wild-caught salmon.
  • Artificial Color Additives
    • Some farmed salmon are given synthetic astaxanthin to enhance their pink color, which is naturally present in wild salmon due to their diet.

Health Tip: If choosing farmed salmon, opt for organic or sustainably farmed varieties with lower contaminant levels, such as those certified by Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) or Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP).

Daffodils ~ A Poem by William Wordsworth

Daffodils

William Wordsworth

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o’er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced; but they
Outdid the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazed-and gazed-but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.

Healthy Tips: Up Your Romance Game

Scientific research has shown that being in a loving relationship is correlated with several health benefits.

I will share one of the health benefits each day over the next five days.

A 2010 study in Psychoneuroendocrinology found that happily married individuals had lower cortisol levels compared to single or unhappily married individuals. People in loving relationships tend to have lower levels of cortisol, the stress hormone. Chronic stress is linked to numerous health issues, including heart disease and weakened immune function. Supportive partners help buffer stress, promoting overall well-being.

Engage With Life

One of my favorite authors is Brazilian author, Paulo Coelho. His books are entertaining and filled with wisdom. I’m always finding something that makes me stop and reflect. Today it was this excerpt, “If you never take a risk, you will never know what changes you need to make.” Playing it safe may help one to sleep better at night, but it comes with a big price. One forfeits the chance to engage with life and test his/her skills against the challenges he/she meets. Anthropologist Joseph Campbell says much the same thing in his book, The Hero’s Journey. Are you ready to engage with life?

Where Is Your Passion?

There is no passion to be found playing small – in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living. ~ Nelson Mandela
