Today’s Quote: Hey, 21st Century—Put Down the Phone and Look Up

Leo Tolstoy’s advice is older than Instagram and wiser than your favorite productivity guru: Stop. Breathe. Look around. Your soul is not a machine—maybe it just needs a moment to remember it’s alive.

If, then, I were asked for the most important advice I could give, that which I considered to be the most useful to the men of our century, I should simply say: in the name of God, stop a moment, cease your work, look around you.” ― Leo Tolstoy

In a world that worships hustle, Tolstoy gives us something truly radical: permission to pause. Not just to catch our breath, but to truly see—the beauty, the suffering, the miracle of being alive. To look around is to return to ourselves, to others, and to the sacred rhythm that doesn’t ask for speed, only presence.

❓ Three Reflective Questions:

  1. When was the last time you truly paused without checking a screen?
  2. What beauty or truth might you be missing by staying constantly busy?
  3. How would your life change if you made stillness a daily practice?

When Fire Ants Attack: My Backyard Became a War Zone

🔥 They come without warning, build their bunkers overnight, and bite like they’ve got nothing to lose. Welcome to life in South Texas, where fire ants rule the land—and your ankles.

They are back and at it again. These creatures do not know how to quit. I have done my best to discourage them. I am a non-violent person but they forced me to turn to violence to get rid of them. I’m talking about fire ants. If you are not from South Texas or other parts of the Southwest US you know what I’m talking about. If you’re not, perhaps you’ve read about them but have not experienced them. When we get rainy weather the fire ants suddenly out of nowhere produce these dirt mounds. They look innocent enough. You may even be tempted to kick it and step on one. Don’t do it. When I walk through my yard my eyes are always looking down. There is a possibility of a rattlesnake or coral snake, but I’ve seen neither one in my yard. Although, I have neighbors who’ve had both. I’m more interested in the fire ants. A few years ago I was picking some rosemary too add to my dinner meal. I was wearing crocs with no socks when I felt their bite. I dropped the rosemary. Ran to my patio and discarded my pants, and brushed the fire ants off my legs as best I could before I headed into the shower. I showered hoping to get rid of every fire ant that was on me. After I dried off, I sat down and started looking at the damage. I had 47 bites on 1 foot. I also had three bites on my calf and two bites as high as my thigh. Those little creatures can move. And they take no prisoners. I grabbed my iPhone and searched for any help I could find in treating these fire ants bites. Trusting the advice of someone who had experienced fire ant bites I smeared my fire ant bites with Purell. That’s the stuff you put on your hands to make sure you’re not going to get Covid or the flu or anything between the two. It seemed to alleviate my pain. The pain was only the beginning. Fire ant bites stay with you for a couple weeks. The bites grow into a little pussy heads. Sleep was beyond question when the itching started. It took all the will power I had not to scratch my bites. Now you can understand why I keep a container of fire ant poison in my garage. As soon as I see one of these hills I am ready to exterminate. It only eliminates them for a little while and then they come back. These guys do not learn their lesson. They’re like some human beings I know. I try to stay away from them as too..

🕵️‍♂️ 3 Speculative and Engaging Questions:

  1. Are fire ants secretly planning their next assault while we sleep?
  2. If fire ants evolved into human-sized creatures, would we even stand a chance?
  3. What makes a creature so small, yet so relentless—and why do they always win?

Writing Prompt: Whiskey, Lies, and Wi-Fi: Your Next Noir Masterpiece Starts Here

Think noir is dead? Think again, gumshoe. Strip away the fedoras and trench coats, swap in burner phones and bad coffee, and you’ve got a gritty tale just waiting to be written. Your detective has a Spotify playlist of regrets, a browser history full of mistakes, and a murder that won’t solve itself.

✍️ Fiction Writing Prompt:

Your main character is a private investigator with a past they’ve paid to have erased. When a suspiciously analog note shows up in their PO box—the kind only someone from the “before times” would send—it forces them to reopen a cold case that got someone killed… maybe even them.

Starting Example:

The coffee tasted like regret and stale hope—just the way he liked it. My office was the back room of a failing yoga studio, and my newest client wore Chanel and desperation. She handed me a note written in cursive, which meant either she was serious or psychotic—possibly both.

🧠 3 Deep-Dive Questions:

  1. What is your detective hiding from, and who still remembers the truth?
  2. How does technology complicate justice in a world already short on it?
  3. What moral line will your character cross—and will they regret it?

Time to Set Sail: Why the Stars Are Calling Your Name

Still staring at the same sky, waiting for a sign? Carl Sagan already gave it to us. We were born to explore—so what are you waiting for?

“Exploration is in our nature. We began as wanderers, and we are wanderers still. We have lingered long enough on the shores of the cosmic ocean. We are ready at last to set sail for the stars.” ― Carl Sagan

Don’t Go Far Off ~ A Poem by Pablo Neruda

Don’t Go Far Off

Pablo Neruda

Don’t go far off, not even for a day, because —
because — I don’t know how to say it: a day is long
and I will be waiting for you, as in an empty station
when the trains are parked off somewhere else, asleep.

Don’t leave me, even for an hour, because
then the little drops of anguish will all run together,
the smoke that roams looking for a home will drift
into me, choking my lost heart.

Oh, may your silhouette never dissolve on the beach;
may your eyelids never flutter into the empty distance.
Don’t leave me for a second, my dearest,

because in that moment you’ll have gone so far
I’ll wander mazily over all the earth, asking,
Will you come back? Will you leave me here, dying?

Today’s Quote: Choose Cheer Over Gold: Tolkien’s Recipe for a Happier World

What if the secret to a merrier world wasn’t locked in a vault but simmering in a pot, echoing in laughter, and strummed in song? Tolkien knew the answer. Maybe it’s time we did too.

If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.”
