The Ringtone in the Dark
Stacy Nelson fell in love with Matt Shores the second he asked her to dance. Two weeks later, Matt moved in with her. Three months later, he proposed. Stacy’s every other thought was Matt. She knew her girlfriends made gagging motions behind her back, but she didn’t care. She had what they didn’t: Matt.
A week before the wedding, steam rolled out of the bathroom as Matt showered, singing off-key. Then, a chime pierced the air. It was a high-pitched, playful ringtone Stacy had never heard before.
She followed the sound into the walk-in closet, kneeling by Matt’s side of the rack. Tucked deep inside a dusty pair of unworn leather loafers was a sleek, black smartphone.
Stacy pulled it out. The glowing screen displayed an incoming call alongside a photo of a striking woman with dark, piercing eyes and a confident smirk.
Who is she?
Stacy’s heart slammed against her ribs. Did she even know the man she was about to marry?
The call ended, leaving behind a string of previewed text messages: “He doesn’t suspect a thing. Everything is set for next Tuesday.”
Next Tuesday was their wedding day.

Just then, the shower cut off. The bathroom door creaked open, and Matt stepped out, a towel wrapped around his waist, smiling warmly.
“Hey babe, have you seen my—” He stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes dropping to the glowing screen in her hand. The warmth vanished from his face.
