Writer’s Prompt: Love, Lies, and a Hidden Ringtone: Flash Fiction Drama

One week before her dream wedding, a ringing shoe uncovers a hidden phone—and a face that changes everything.

The Ringtone in the Dark

Stacy Nelson fell in love with Matt Shores the second he asked her to dance. Two weeks later, Matt moved in with her. Three months later, he proposed. Stacy’s every other thought was Matt. She knew her girlfriends made gagging motions behind her back, but she didn’t care. She had what they didn’t: Matt.

A week before the wedding, steam rolled out of the bathroom as Matt showered, singing off-key. Then, a chime pierced the air. It was a high-pitched, playful ringtone Stacy had never heard before.

She followed the sound into the walk-in closet, kneeling by Matt’s side of the rack. Tucked deep inside a dusty pair of unworn leather loafers was a sleek, black smartphone.

Stacy pulled it out. The glowing screen displayed an incoming call alongside a photo of a striking woman with dark, piercing eyes and a confident smirk.

Who is she?

Stacy’s heart slammed against her ribs. Did she even know the man she was about to marry?

The call ended, leaving behind a string of previewed text messages: “He doesn’t suspect a thing. Everything is set for next Tuesday.”

Next Tuesday was their wedding day.

Stacy’s hands trembled as she memorized the number, her shock hardening into a cold, sharp rage. She was going to track down this deceitful diva and tear her life apart.

Just then, the shower cut off. The bathroom door creaked open, and Matt stepped out, a towel wrapped around his waist, smiling warmly.

“Hey babe, have you seen my—” He stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes dropping to the glowing screen in her hand. The warmth vanished from his face.

What Happens Next?

Does Stacy confront Matt right now, or does she play along and call the number in secret? How does the mystery unravel? Pick up the pen and write the ending!

Writer’s Prompt: Two Heels, One Heartthrob, and a Murder Plot: Romance, Revenge, and Really Bad Decisions

What happens when love triangles get sharp edges? Two brilliant (but slightly unhinged) women set their sights on the same man, and neither plans to back down. Spoiler: someone’s going to need alibis and a good dry cleaner.

Starting Paragraph:

Lena always believed in the power of fate. Fate brought her to Michael in a rainstorm. Fate also delivered Ivy, her coworker-turned-archnemesis, straight into his bed. Now Lena’s belief in fate is being replaced with a very detailed plan—and a locked drawer full of suspicious tools. But what if Ivy’s plan was already in motion?

Three Deep-Dive Questions for Writers:

  1. What emotional wounds or insecurities drive each woman to such extremes rather than simply walking away?
  2. Is Michael truly worth the chaos, or is he just a mirror reflecting their own desires and desperation?
  3. If one of them “wins,” what does that even look like—victory or self-destruction?
