Is It Time for an Attitude Check Up?

Attitude is defined as “a settled way of thinking or feeling about someone or something, typically one that is reflected in a person’s behavior.” Our attitude is not fixed, we have within us the power to change our attitudes. Some attitudes are anchors and prevent us from being successful or enjoying life as fully as we can. Our attitude and behavior work together to create our lived experience.. Even our attitude toward others influences their behavior toward us. It’s not easy to change a disempowering attitude, it takes awareness, work, and the motivation that the change will bring beneficial results. Perhaps it’s time for an attitude checkup. Which attitudes are holding you back, which attitudes are empowering helping you to move forward.

Healthy Tips: Gratitude: Nature’s Stress Buster You Don’t Have to Swallow

An attitude of gratitude has health benefits for us. For the next 5 days, including today, I will provide blog posts that provide a way in which you can use gratitude to improve your health.

Why pop a pill when you can lower stress levels by saying “thank you” to life’s little gifts—like your coffee staying hot until the last sip?

Chronic stress wrecks your health—but gratitude fights back. Research shows that practicing gratitude reduces cortisol levels and increases heart rate variability, a marker of resilience. Start small: each night before bed, write down 3 things you’re grateful for. They can be as simple as not burning your toast.

Practice Tip: Create a “gratitude jar.” Each day, write one good thing that happened and toss it in. On tough days, pick a few out and remind yourself: you’ve got more wins than you thought.

Think gratitude only calms your nerves? Wait until you see what it does for your heart—literally. Stay tuned for a cardiac surprise.

Our Viewpoint Determines Our Attitude

Last week in South Texas we were setting record temperatures for warmth. Last night a cold front came rushing through and the temperatures plummeted 40 degrees (F). Okay, it was still not close to freezing, but it was noticeably colder. Some folks complained about the warm weather. When the cold front came through, they complained about the cold weather. Complaining doesn’t do much good especially if what we’re complaining about can’t be changed. We can always view our circumstances differently. For example, when unseasonably warm weather arrives I can wear short sleeve shirts, take a nature walk, or clean up my garden area. As for the cold front, I can enjoy the clean, fresh air (thank you Canada), a sense of energy, and cook up a healthy pot of lentil soup. Changing our viewpoint changes everything. Change what we can change. Let go what we can’t change. Enjoy it all.

Setbacks Happen, Big Deal, Never Quit

Setbacks happen. They happen to everyone. How we respond when we’re knocked down makes all the difference in our lives. Some people turn to anger, resentment, and revenge. Others remain frozen unable to come to grips with the reality that they failed. And others, shake it off, learn from the setback, and forge ahead never looking back. Motivational consultant Og Mandino wrote, “Failure will never overtake me if my determination to succeed is strong enough.” A setback gives us the opportunity to learn, rise after a fall, and to dig deep inside and move forward. Develop a never quit attitude. Always confidently move forward seizing every opportunity to do good and make a difference.

Health Facts: Maintaining A Positive Attitude

Two habits you can develop to maintain an optimistic attitude are:

  1. Daily Gratitude Practice: Take time each day to write down three things you’re grateful for. This habit shifts your focus from what’s lacking or challenging to what is positive and fulfilling in your life, reinforcing an optimistic mindset.
  2. Reframing Negative Thoughts: Whenever you catch yourself thinking negatively, consciously reframe the thought into a more positive or constructive perspective. For example, instead of thinking “I failed at this,” you could think “This was a learning opportunity, and I can do better next time.” This practice helps you view setbacks as opportunities for growth rather than insurmountable obstacles.

These habits foster a mindset focused on positivity and resilience, supporting an overall optimistic outlook.
