I make a to do list each night before I go to bed. I do that to prevent my mind from waking me up at 2 a.m. and saying, “Ray, don’t forget to pay your electric bill, crazy stuff like that. When I check those items off the list I’m not sure if it eases my mind or not, but I no longer think about it. What I remember about my day is the people I connected with. Each one has a story they want to tell and all I have to do is listen. Yesterday, Jody told me about a close relative who died. I heard about the cremation and memorial service. Corky told me about his hips and how badly they hurt and about his wife who has stage 4 breast cancer. He can’t have operation on his hips because he has a bad heart. Bob told me he doesn’t know how to cook and envies me because I do. Alice told me she is going on biking trip in Europe this summer. Each of us has a story that’s waiting to be told. When we listen to the stories of other people we gain deeper insight and compassion for them,

Mushroom Hunting and Learning

My dad was an avid mushroom hunter in the fall. He knew the secrets of finding button mushrooms. My mom would sauté them with garlic, onions, and olive oil. They were delicious. I went with him on numerous occasions. he tried to teach me how to tell the difference between a poison mushroom and the mushrooms he picked. I was more interested in looking for Native American artifacts. There are times when we want to teach someone something important and we become frustrated when they don’t learn. There has to be a readiness and desire to learn before the doors to the mind open. BTW, today, I buy my mushrooms at the supermarket. LOL

Today’s Healthy Tip: Are You Getting Enough Sleep?

Get enough sleep: Most adults need around 7-8 hours of sleep per night.

I generally get at least 7 hours of sleep each night. I go to bed around 9 a.m. and set an alarm for 4:45 a.m. It’s natural to have those nights where your brain takes off and no matter what you do, it doesn’t shut down. I don’t worry about it. I tell my brain to enjoy itself while I picture myself hiking in the Rockies, taking a road trip to Corpus and Padre Island, or watching the Red Sox play a nine inning game. In my mind they win (hey we’re not talking reality here). Usually I’m asleep by the 5th inning. Our minds are great that way. We can make anything up. Usually, my mind decides what I’m making up is more entertaining than what it was worried about and I’m off to sleep. It works for me. Try it.
