Thinking Out Loud: Discovering Real Courage

Today’s Thinking Out Loud reflection is on Harper Lee’s  work, To Kill a Mockingbird.

“I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what.”

Note: It takes courage to stand alone against the crowd (in can be anywhere) to support something you know is right, but the crowd doesn’t want to hear. If you know in your heart you are right, you take the stand and along with it, the consequences. I found myself in that situation several times. I have the scars to prove it. I can look back and wonder where I found the courage. All I know is that it was there at the right moment. I think that’s how it works. You have to face it, alone. When you do, the courage awakens within you, and you discover strength you didn’t realize was there.

Today’s Power Thought ~ Separate from the Crowd

If you follow the crowd you’ll have plenty of company, if you rise too high, they’ll pull back down. If you separate from the crowd and follow your heart, you may walk alone, but it will be your chosen path. And, you’ll rise as high as you dare to fly.

Something to Think About

If you’re following the crowd do you know where you are going? Does anyone in the crowd know where he/she is going? If you want to know where you’re going, choose your destination, plan your trip, and set out. You may get lost., You may be criticized for not being like others. Big deal. It is your journey. You designed it. You took the chances. You learned more by the ups and downs of your journey than you’d have learned by following the crowd.

Something to Think About

Give yourself permission to not follow the crowd. Give yourself permission to believe the majority might be wrong and you’re on the right course. Give yourself permission to listen to the inner urgings of your heart and to ignore the clamoring and noise of the crowd.
