Kindness Works ~ Being Kind to Yourself

When Was the Last Time You Were Kind to Yourself?

Act as though you are a friend who needs you. It’s so easy for us to be kind and supportive to the people we care about, but we often forget we need to show up for ourselves too. If a friend was dealing with a stressful situation or was feeling down, how would you respond to them? Now flip the script. What if you were in their shoes? Try doing for yourself what you would do for them. Whether it’s giving self-affirmations to validate your good qualities or buying yourself a thoughtful gift, be a friend to your inner self, too.

Think About It ~ Story Sharing Has Many Benefits

Each of us is a composite of stories. I called my brother yesterday and wished him a merry Christmas. During during our conversation we began to share childhood stories. We each had fond memories of where we grew up, the people who lived in the tenements, and our experiences with them. We laughed at windows broken by hit baseballs, playing on railroad tracks, and the nearby river. When we listen to each other’s stories, we discover how similar we are. We discover the differences that separate us are not as great as we imagined. Encourage others to share their stories with you and be willing to share stories as well. Who knows, you may make a new friend or heal a wounded relationship.

What Kind of Friend Should You Be?

What kind of friend should you be? Have you ever thought about it? Have you thought about the what the word friend means to you? For many in our digital age a friend is an acquaintance on a social media platform. For some, a friend is someone they know by name and with whom they are somewhat familiar. Others understand the reciprocal nature of friendship. They understand friendship bonds two people together. These friends care deeply for each other and sacrifice to help each other.

Today’s Poem ~ A Mile with Me

A Mile With Me
Henry Van Dyke
O who will walk a mile with me
Along life’s merry way?
A comrade blithe and full of glee,
Who dares to laugh out loud and free,
And let his frolic fancy play,
Like a happy child, through the flowers gay
That fill the field and fringe the way
Where he walks a mile with me.

And who will walk a mile with me
Along life’s weary way?
A friend whose heart has eyes to see
The stars shine out o’er the darkening lea,
And the quiet rest at the end o’ the day,–
A friend who knows, and dares to say,
The brave, sweet words that cheer the way
Where he walks a mile with me.

With such a comrade, such a friend,
I fain would walk till journeys end,
Through summer sunshine, winter rain,
And then?–Farewell, we shall meet again!

A Better Life ~ Moving On

A good friend is moving out of the neighborhood to move closer to family nearly 1200 miles away. She was a good neighbor and friend. We’ll all miss her and wish her well. We’ll have good memories of her time here. Now, the goal is to welcome our new neighbors into her home. I’m looking forward making new friends. Life goes on and we all have to move on.

Today’s Good Word – Take Time

Take time to let people cross in the parking lot.

Take time to call a loved one who hasn’t heard from you.

Take time to pray.

Take time to enjoy coffee or iced tea with a friend.

Take time to enjoy a meal and savor every bite.

Take time to look at the sunset.

Take time to be quiet and enjoy the silence.

A Better Life ~ Friends

Life is better with friends in it. Friends to share the joys. Friends to share the sorrows.Friends to celebrate. Want a friend? Be a friend.

Today’s Poem ~ Let Me Live by the Side of the Road

Let Me Live by the Side of the Road

Sam Walter Foss

Let me live in a house by the side of the road,
Where the race of men go by—
The men who are good and the men who are bad,
As good and as bad as I.
I would not sit in the scorner’s seat,
    Or hurl the cynic’s ban;—
Let me live in a house by the side of the road
And be a friend to man.

I see from my house by the side of the road,
By the side of the highway of life,
The men who press with the ardor of hope,
The men who are faint with the strife.
But I turn not away from their smiles nor their tears—
Both parts of an infinite plan;—
Let me live in my house by the side of the road
And be a friend to man.

I know there are brook-gladdened meadows ahead
    And mountains of wearisome height;
And the road passes on through the long afternoon
And stretches away to the night.
But still I rejoice when the travelers rejoice,
And weep with the strangers that moan,
Nor live in my house by the side of the road
Like a man who dwells alone.

Let me live in my house by the side of the road
Where the race of men go by—
They are good, they are bad, they are weak, they are strong,
    Wise, foolish—so am I.
Then why should I sit in the scorner’s seat
    Or hurl the cynic’s ban?—
Let me live in my house by the side of the road
And be a friend to man.

Something to Think About

The most important person to seek as a friend is oneself. When I can except myself with all my faults, with all the things I don’t like about myself, and look in the mirror and say I love you. I have made a friend and offered that friend unconditional love.

💡 Something to Think About

A good friend  . . .

Stays with me in good times and bad.

Ignores my bad moods.

Celebrates my wins.

Knows when to speak and when to stay silent.

Is someone I can count on 24/7.

I hope you have a good friend. If you do, you have a treasure, never lose it.
