Joy by Carl Sandburg

I chose this poem for today, Christmas, because of the joy it brings to my heart each year. It is a joyful and joy-filled day of love. I feel it, I see it, and I personally experience it. I wish you a joyful and joy-filled Christmas Day that continues throughout your life.

Joy by Carl Sandburg

Let a joy keep you.
Reach out your hands
And take it when it runs by,
As the Apache dancer
Clutches his woman.
I have seen them
Live long and laugh loud,
Sent on singing, singing,
Smashed to the heart
Under the ribs
With a terrible love.
Joy always,
Joy everywhere–
Let joy kill you!
Keep away from the little deaths.

Joy & Sorrow by Khalil Gibran

Joy and Sorrow chapter VIII by Khalil Gibran

Then a woman said, “Speak to us of Joy and Sorrow.”

And he answered:

Your joy is your sorrow unmasked.

And the selfsame well from which your laughter rises was oftentimes filled with your tears.

And how else can it be?

The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain.

Is not the cup that hold your wine the very cup that was burned in the potter’s oven?

And is not the lute that soothes your spirit, the very wood that was hollowed with knives?

When you are joyous, look deep into your heart and you shall find it is only that which has given you sorrow that is giving you joy.

When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight.

Some of you say, “Joy is greater than sorrow,” and others say, “Nay, sorrow is the greater.”

But I say unto you, they are inseparable.

Together they come, and when one sits alone with you at your board, remember that the other is asleep upon your bed.

Verily you are suspended like scales between your sorrow and your joy.

Only when you are empty are you at standstill and balanced.

When the treasure-keeper lifts you to weigh his gold and his silver, needs must your joy or your sorrow rise or fall.

Is It Time To Wake Up?

We can sleep walk through life. It’s easy when we don’t pay attention to life as it comes toward in the present moment. When we wake up, we see life as it is. It isn’t always pleasant. When we experience life, we experience it’s joy and sadness. We experience love and pain. We experience hope and despair. It’s all part of life. In this brief YouTube video Anthony DeMello challenges us to wake up. Get inspired.

A New & Grateful Perspective

Too often I find myself so close to my challenges, I lose perspective. When I step back and view my challenges from a new perspective, everything changes. I see my strength. I see meaning in my challenges. I see everything with a different set of eyes. I am filled with gratitude. I am filled with wonder. I am filled with awe. In the following the YouTube video an American astronaut describes his sense of gratitude for our planet Earth from his view on the Space Station.
