My dad was an avid mushroom hunter in the fall. He knew the secrets of finding button mushrooms. My mom would sauté them with garlic, onions, and olive oil. They were delicious. I went with him on numerous occasions. he tried to teach me how to tell the difference between a poison mushroom and the mushrooms he picked. I was more interested in looking for Native American artifacts. There are times when we want to teach someone something important and we become frustrated when they don’t learn. There has to be a readiness and desire to learn before the doors to the mind open. BTW, today, I buy my mushrooms at the supermarket. LOL

Healthy Tips: Make Learning a Lifelong Habit
Today’s Health Tip:

Learn something new: Keep your mind active by learning new things.
When I was in grade school my mom would ask me each day, “Ray, what did you learn today?” Every once in a while I replied, “Nothing.” She’d give me a look and said, “You must have learned something.” Well, I wasn’t going to tell her what my friend Charlie told me, so I thought about what happened in the classroom and said something. When I finished she’d always say, “Make sure you learn something every day.” That was good advice then. It’s good advice now. I think the more difficult the learning curve, the better it is for us. When learning is difficult, we have to concentrate. We have to be willing to fail and start over. We have to have patience with ourselves. And, we have to apply one of my core principles, NEVER QUIT.
Today’s Quote: In Search of Self
We never get to the bottom of ourselves on our own. We discover who we are face to face and side by side with others in work, love and learning. ~ Robert Neelly Bellah
Today’s Quote: Learn the Lesson the First Time
There is only one thing more painful than learning from experience and that is not learning from experience. ~ Archibald MacLeish
Today’s Thought: Want to Lose 25 Pounds?
There are some things in life you only learn through experience. You can see it, you can understand it, you know it’s true, but you don’t internalize and make it a part of your being. Making something that is so obvious a part of our being requires both an openness to learning and a willingness to change what we have always done to something different. One example is someone else’s drama does not have to be our drama. When we internalize that we free ourselves from carrying a drama king or queens’s problems on our backs. Internalize that and it’s like losing 25 pounds. All of sudden you’re free.
Listening Is the Key to Learning ~ Read Steven Spielberg’s Quote
When you listen, you learn, You absorb like a sponge – and your life becomes so much better than when you are just trying to be listened to all the time.
Steven Spielberg
Thinking Out Loud ~ Reflecting is a Worthwhile Experience
Learn From Your Experiences
James Allen in his book, “As a Man Thinketh, says, “[I}f he will watch, control, and alter his thoughts, tracing their effects upon himself, upon others, and upon his life and circumstances, linking cause and effect by patient practice and investigation, and utilizing his every experience, even to the most trivial, everyday occurrence, as a means of obtaining that knowledge of himself, which is Understanding, Wisdom, Power. ” P. 13
As a Man Thinketh is available online at gutenberg.org under the Harvard Classics.
NOTE: Many religious traditions tell us that an end of the day reflection on our day’s experiences is a good way to examine our conscience and reflect on our spiritual journey. When we reflect on our day’s experiences we can see what we did that was successful and what we did that we could do much better. In this way, we can learn from our experiences. The experiences of the day are not wasted. Each experience, whether good or bad, has a set of lessons to teach us if we are willing to harvest them. Practice reflecting on your day’s experiences for a week, and I think you’ll notice a wonderful difference.
Feeling Good Tip of the Day ~ Moving On
“Look for the lesson in mistakes. No one is perfect. Everyone makes mistakes. Most of us make many of them. . . . By learning to look for the lesson and taking heed of it, we’ll be less likely to see our actions as failures and more likely to view them as opportunities to grow.” Source
NOTE: If you’re a perfectionist making mistakes is a tough slog. It’s better to lighten up, dust yourself off, give thanks for the lessons it taught, and move on. Mistakes happen, give it your best to learn from them.
Today’s Power Thought ~ Is It Time to Learn Something New?
“I am always doing that which I cannot do, in order that I may learn how to do it.” Pablo Picasso
Learning something new is hard work. It takes patience, discipline, and desire. Those who choose to continually learn discover wonderful unintended consequences, they become emotionally healthier, happier, and confident.
