Ask Me ~ A Poem by William Safford

Ask Me

William Safford

Some time when the river is ice ask me
mistakes I have made. Ask me whether
what I have done is my life. Others
have come in their slow way into
my thought, and some have tried to help
or to hurt: ask me what difference
their strongest love or hate has made.

I will listen to what you say.
You and I can turn and look
at the silent river and wait. We know
the current is there, hidden; and there
are comings and goings from miles away
that hold the stillness exactly before us.
What the river says, that is what I say.

Healthy Tips: Own Up to Your Mistakes – It Builds Trust

Trust doesn’t require perfection, but it does require accountability when mistakes happen. Apologize and Make Amends When You Mess Up ` Why it matters: Nobody is perfect, but owning up to mistakes strengthens trust.

Romantic Relationship Example:

If you forget an important date or say something hurtful, don’t make excuses. Instead, say, “I’m really sorry for forgetting our anniversary. I see why that hurt you, and I’ll do better next time.”

Friendship Example:

If you accidentally cancel plans last-minute, acknowledge it: “I know I let you down by canceling today. I should have planned better. Can I make it up to you?” A sincere apology restores trust.

Healthy Tips: Learn From Your Mistakes

Mentally tough folks learn from their mistakes, they refuse to be crushed by them. Here is a tip on how to make mistakes work for you:

“Making a mistake is just a source of feedback informing you that you are off course use that data to focus on what to do next. Then forget the mistake. You can visualize yourself flushing it down the toilet or releasing it in a balloon. The point is to leave the mistake behind and build on what you’ve learned. You cannot perform at your best by focusing on your worst.” Source

Today’s Thought: It’s Okay to be Wrong

Everyone has a right to be wrong, more than once. Everyone has a right to mess up, more than once. The folks who like to point fingers and criticize don’t realize when they are pointing a finger they are pointing three fingers back toward themselves. We get along a lot better when we cut each other some slack, laugh at our mistakes, and encourage each other to keep trying.

Positive Thought of the Day ~ You Are Wonderful

“Life is just the same as learning to swim. Do not be afraid of making mistakes, for there is no other way of learning how to live!”

NOTE: Mistakes are as much a part of life as breathing. We make them. When we learn from them we grow. Embrace your mistakes and your imperfections. They are part of what makes you, you. You are wonderful, mistakes and imperfections and all.

Feeling Good Tip of the Day ~ Moving On

“Look for the lesson in mistakesNo one is perfect. Everyone makes mistakes. Most of us make many of them.  . . .  By learning to look for the lesson and taking heed of it, we’ll be less likely to see our actions as failures and more likely to view them as opportunities to grow.” Source

NOTE: If you’re a perfectionist making mistakes is a tough slog. It’s better to lighten up, dust yourself off, give thanks for the lessons it taught, and move on. Mistakes happen, give it your best to learn from them.

Maxwell Maltz

Today’s Positive Thought ~ Be Big Enough to Admit Mistakes

Be big enough to admit mistakes, smart enough to profit from them, and strong enough to correct them (John C. Maxwell).”

It takes heaps of courage to admit when we’re wrong. Insecure people, those without a foundation to stand on,  have difficulty admitting mistakes and learning from them. Mistakes are our teachers. When we learn from them, we grow in knowledge and wisdom. Mistakes always open new doors for us. They show us which paths are the wrong paths and turn us in new directions.

What past failures? What past mistakes? They’r over, done, forget them.

Today is your day. Go after it with all the gusto you have.
