Today’s Positive Thought ~ What Are You Doing Today?

“To stay youthful, stay useful (John Keats).”

It’s true, we need to have something to do each day. Otherwise, we’re bored. At each stage of our life the meaning of our life changes. Our task is to discover and rediscover the meaning in our life. When we do we stay useful, youthful ad we’re never bored.

Today’s Health Tip ~ 5 Tips to Feel Better about Life

  1. Keep company with good people. – Maximize the amount of time that you spend with people you enjoy being around. Connecting with others who radiate positivity and have similar interests will excite and energize you. On the other side, people you don’t relate to you or who have negative outlooks, complain often, or make poor choices will only drain your energy account. Be selective about the company you keep.
  2. Avoid news overdose. – Consuming news is an important way to stay connected to what’s happening in the world. It can be educational, entertaining and even uplifting. Unfortunately, the news too frequently is filled with stories of suffering. These stories can skew your view of the world and cause you to focus on your worst fears instead of recognizing the good that surrounds you. You can’t avoid these stories altogether, but try to minimize your exposure when you can, especially during trying times.
  3. Get regular exercise. – Do you find yourself feeling lethargic halfway through the day? Have you ever gotten winded by simple everyday duties, such as grocery shopping or household chores? The Department of Health and Human Services recommends that adults complete at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity each week. Contrary to what you might believe, this will add to your energy account and not subtract from it. Exercise relieves stress and tension, strengthens muscles and boosts endurance, and helps your body work more efficiently during other physical tasks or activities.
  4. Do something meaningful each day. – What do you feel passionate about? Do you have a special talent that you’d like to practice more often or share with others? Do something you enjoy every day, even if it’s a simple act like cooking a healthy meal or listening to your favorite song. Putting effort into the things that matter most to you will help you use and reserve your energy in ways that will bring out the best in you.
  5. Think good thoughts for others. – Maintaining a compassionate mindset is another way to conserve energy. One example of practicing this way of thinking is called kind attention. For example, try to make eye contact with a stranger and smile, while thinking “I wish you well.” This positive act can, instead, keep you from judging that person. Judging others can cause us to place judgment on ourselves, and that type of negative internal dialogue can be exhausting. You’ll feel better with each step you take toward this important self-care investment.

Today’s Inspiration ~ It’s Time to be a bit Silly

“Do silly things. Foolishness is a great deal more vital and healthy than our straining and striving after a meaningful life.”

~ Anton Chekhov

Today’s Poem ~ O Me! O Life!

O Me! O Life!
Walt Whitman
O ME! O life!… of the questions of these recurring;
Of the endless trains of the faithless—of cities fill’d with the foolish;
Of myself forever reproaching myself, (for who more foolish than I, and who more
faithless?)
Of eyes that vainly crave the light—of the objects mean—of the struggle ever
renew’d;
Of the poor results of all—of the plodding and sordid crowds I see around me;
Of the empty and useless years of the rest—with the rest me intertwined;
The question, O me! so sad, recurring—What good amid these, O me, O life?

Answer.
That you are here—that life exists, and identity;
That the powerful play goes on, and you will contribute a verse.

Something to Think About

All of our paths, unique to each of us, converge as we search for the deepest meanings in our lives. We may use our paths to run away from discovering the deepest meaning in our lives. Yet, life has a curious way of pulling us back toward the search. The wise ones discover the deepest meanings in life early on. They are the mystics, sages, or prophets who see things the rest of us have yet to see.  For many, the discovery of the deepest meaning in life is like peeling an onion, layer by layer. It takes time and patience. It’s worth the effort.

Today’s Power Thought ~ What is Life Calling You to Do?

What is life calling you to do? I think each of us has a calling. It may be for one’s entire life, or it may be for the moment, with other callings making themselves known at the right moment. When one says YES to the calling, one knows that this is what he/she must do and follow it through no matter how challenges one faces.

Today’s Good Word ~ Search

We’re always searching for something. What are you searching for? We may not think about it often, but I believe we’re searching for meaning. We’re searching to discover why we’re alive and what we are supposed to do with the life we have. Searching for life’s meaning is not meant for the faint of heart. It takes courage to commit to this search. We may discover that what we were searching for is not where our search is leading us. Our search for meaning may be leading us down a road we’d never choose, yet, once it takes us down this road, we have no choice but to continue the search. What we will discover will change our lives. Our search will lead us to our life’s purpose and a deep understanding why it is meant for us and us alone.

Today’s Good Word ~ Work

Work is important to every human being. Work provides us with a livelihood. Work becomes part of our identity. Work ties directly to our self-image. All work is valuable work. Our work links to others in numerous ways. When we view our work as important, we begin to grasp a sense of the meaning of our lives. My dad, for example, was a shoe work, bartender, and janitor. His work provided footwear for people. Drinks for those relaxing after work. And, a clean environment for people to work in. His work was valuable. He was important to a lot of people in just the same way your work is important to a lot of people.

“A man knows when he has found his vocation when he stops thinking about how to live and begins to live.”  ~ Thomas Merton

Something to Think About

Life offers opportunity after opportunity to discover our life’s meaning. When life offers an opportunity to find our life’s meaning, it is almost always connected to other people. We find meaning through our interactions and connections to other people We are part of a human community. Our human community may be our family, the neighbors on our street or in our building. Each of our interactions and connections links us to others.The more we reach out to others, the more we learn about ourselves. If we run away from interactions and connections we may be running away from ourselves. Out of these interactions and connections our life’s meaning emerges. If we’re awake, we’ll see it and know it is designed uniquely for us.
