What If I Chose Not to Respond?

What if I chose not to respond to a disrespectful remark? That’s a tough one, for sure. Yet if I choose to respond I am throwing more wood on the fire. I don’t think anyone needs to stand still for disrespectful remarks. There is a simple way to do deal with it. Say nothing, turn, and walk away. Let the angry person swirl around in his/her personal pot of angry stew. When the situation calms down, it is important engage with the person who made the disrespectful remark.and say something like, “I felt disrespected yesterday. If there is a problem, I’d like to hear it in respectful words and discuss it civily.” Nothing more is needed. You’ll find out quickly if reconciliation is possible or if it is time to move on.

What If . . .

What if I quit settling for less than what I deserve? I was fortunate early on in my career a mentor took me aside and gave me sage advice. He said it a bit differently, but his meaning was clear. He said never settle for less than what you’re worth. I followed his advice. I was criticized by friends for being foolish and turning down job offers. I turned them down because I followed my mentor’s advice. Patience always paid off. Never settle for less than what you’re worth. You’ll feel good about yourself. And, others will respect you.

Today’s Power Thought ~ The Value of a Good Listener

An Italian proverb says, “Few words are needed for a good listener.” When we listen to another we open our mind and heart to that person. By listening with our mind and heart we offer the speaker our deep respect. Through our listening the speaker understands that we value what he/she has to say.

A Better Life ~ What Wounds & What Heals

Insults, disrespect, and intolerance wound. Love, forgiveness, respect, and tolerance heal. When we work to heal the relationships closest to us we contribute to the healing of our fractured society.

A Better Life ~ The World Needs You

Work is important for each of us. In many ways it defines us. We often ask a new acquaintance, “What do you do?” Some folks receive notoriety for their work. Most of us work in obscurity. Yet, our work is no less important. Whatever the work, it is important and valued. Value the work you do and value yourself for doing the work well. The world needs you. Thank you for the effort you put into your work.

Today’s Good Word ~ Work

Work is important to every human being. Work provides us with a livelihood. Work becomes part of our identity. Work ties directly to our self-image. All work is valuable work. Our work links to others in numerous ways. When we view our work as important, we begin to grasp a sense of the meaning of our lives. My dad, for example, was a shoe work, bartender, and janitor. His work provided footwear for people. Drinks for those relaxing after work. And, a clean environment for people to work in. His work was valuable. He was important to a lot of people in just the same way your work is important to a lot of people.

A Better Life ~ Sharing

When my 5 daughters were young we had house rule, ‘share and share alike.’ We wanted to teach the girls that everyone deserves an equal piece of the pie or whatever was available. I still follow the rule. Sharing is a way bringing us closer. I’ve found there’s always enough to go around. Sharing is a form of love in action.

A Better Life ~ Respect

Life is better when we respect each other. We listen to each other. We disagree civilly. We recognize each other’s strengths. We share admiration for each other’s gifts. We share a sense of honesty and integrity that builds trust. We care about each other’s feelings. Respect is a building block for strong relationships, families, and communities.

🌞 Today’s Inspiration ~ Choose to be Happy

“Happiness doesn’t depend upon who you are or what you have; it depends solely upon what you think. Start each day by thinking of all the things you have to be thankful for. Your future will depend very largely on the thoughts you think today. So think thoughts of hope and confidence and love and success. ~ Dale Carnegie

🌞 Today’s Inspiration ~ Light and Darkness

“I will love the light for it shows me the way, yet I will endure the darkness because it shows me the stars.” ~ Og Mandino
