Today’s Thought: Truth Matters

Truth matters.It matters the same way honesty and respect matter. We set ourselves up to be hurt or disappointed when we believe what we are told at face value. The only time I think taking what I am told at face value is from someone I’ve known and learned to trust. When I discover someone is lying, I make an assumption if they’ll lie in one matter, they’ll lie in other matters as well. Trust is something earned over time. Be wise, check out the facts. Don’t let others tell you the facts.

Today’s Thought: Saying One Thing, Doing Another

Ever come across people who say one thing but then do another? I have, lots of times. I’ve met so many I’ve learned to watch what they do, how they treat people, and what they’re willing to work for before I’ll decide if I want to get closer. Lots of church going people, for example, can quote their holy books, but watch out when they pull out of the parking lot. You get the idea. A good rule of thumb to follow, see if what a person says matches what he/she does before you get too close.

Today’s Thought: Should You Trust People Who Lie?

I had a colleague who lied. It didn’t take long to figure out that every time he/she moved his/her lips he/she was spilling a half truth, misrepresentation, or an outright lie. He/she was personally engaging so people ignored his/her lies. After a while those who worked with him/her knew they couldn’t trust him/her. The problem being, he/she was responsible for guiding students through their doctoral work. His/her students suffered because other faculty couldn’t trust him/her when he/she said his/her students were ready to defend their dissertation. Lying matters whether it is in an academic department, a relationship between two people, or by people running for office. People with integrity don’t knowingly lie to mislead others.

Today’s Thought: Is It Time to Take the Leap?

Plan, plan, and plan. If planning is all we’re doing, we’re not doing much. We’re a lot like a gerbil running as fast as he can on his gerbil wheel. Whatever it is that we want we have to take a leap away from planning. Whatever we choose to do, it’s not going to be perfect, there will be challenges and setbacks. Those are wonderful gifts, they make us stronger, they sharpen our minds, they increase our vision. Is it time to say, “Enough with the planning. It’s time to leap.” Trust yourself. Trust that you are able to adapt to the challenges. Give it your best and place the outcome in God’s hands. You’ll surprise yourself.

Today’s Poem: Fate by Francis Bret Harte

Fate

Francis Bret Hart

“The sky is clouded, the rocks are bare,
The spray of the tempest is white in air;
The winds are out with the waves at play,
And I shall not tempt the sea to-day.

“The trail is narrow, the wood is dim,
The panther clings to the arching limb;
And the lion’s whelps are abroad at play,
And I shall not join in the chase to-day.”

But the ship sailed safely over the sea,
And the hunters came from the chase in glee;
And the town that was builded upon a rock
Was swallowed up in the earthquake shock.

Today’s Thought: A Handshake and Trust

I had a true old-fashioned Texas experience yesterday. I had my roof inspected for hail damage. The roofer and I had a lengthy talk about what had to be done, how it would be done, the estimated cost, and the process of submitting a claim to my insurance company. We agreed if the insurance company approves the claim the roofer will take care of the repairs. We shook hands. My handshake meant I won’t run around seeking to find someone else who will do the work cheaper. I trust the roofer to do the job correctly (I did do my research before he visited). I know he trusted me to follow through on my promise to use his company. That’s old school, a handshake and the trust that goes with it. It would be nice if more of it happened.

Today’s Poem: Daybreak by Sarah Orne Jewett

Daybreak

Sarah Orne Jewett

Where out beyond the eastern hills
    Was faintest light, there, scorning
Shadows which warned us back, we turned
    Our faces toward the morning.

And soon by daylight we could see
    The road we thought so weary;
Where we were frightened in the night
    Was anything but dreary.

On either side grew grass and flowers,
    We saw each other’s faces;
The light shone deep into our hearts,
    The rocks were resting places.

When first upon that morning cold
    We saw the golden glory,
And found the light was meant for us,
    And learned anew its story,

We were so glad. With hearts at rest,
    In peace the sunshine found us.
We sang a psalm, and smiling watched
    The pleasant land around us.

For, though the clouds grow dark o’erhead,
    And storms may bring us sorrow,
It’s not for always, and the sun
    Still shines—will shine to-morrow.

We lose the path, our feet soon tire;
    We seek new ways, lamenting;
And back like truant children come,
    Unsatisfied, repenting.

Though we may fall and fall again,
    We fear to walk no longer;
And even through mistakes and pain
    Can hourly grow the stronger.

Dear Lord of Light! forever lead
Our wandering hearts. Oh! guide us;
Nor let us once in storm or sun
    Forget the Friend beside us.
