Light for the Journey: The Courage to Let Go of Fear and See Differently

When we loosen fear’s grip, the world doesn’t just look different—we become different, freer versions of ourselves.

“To perceive the world differently, we must be willing to change our belief system, let the past slip away, expand our sense of now, and dissolve the fear in our minds,” ― William James

Reflection

William James invites us into a courageous kind of seeing—one that begins not with the world changing, but with us changing. When we loosen our grip on old beliefs, the past loses its power to define us. When we step fully into the present moment, new possibilities rise like dawn. And when fear dissolves, even briefly, we remember who we truly are: creative, capable, and free. James’s wisdom reminds us that transformation is never out of reach. It starts the moment we’re willing to look again—with softer eyes and a braver heart.

Question for Readers:

What belief or fear, if released today, would help you see your world more clearly?

Light for the Journey: Follow What Makes You Come Alive: Wisdom from William James

Inside you is a voice that knows exactly who you are meant to be — if you’re willing to follow what brings you fully alive.

“Seek out that particular mental attribute which makes you feel most deeply and vitally alive, along with which comes the inner voice which says, ‘This is the real me,’ and when you have found that attitude, follow it.” William James

William James invites us to pay attention to the inner spark that feels unmistakably alive — the feeling that says, “This is who I really am.” Too often, we silence that voice with responsibility, fear, or the expectations of others. But the truth is simple: what brings you alive is not random; it is guidance. It points toward your truest direction, your deepest strengths, and your most meaningful life. When we honor that feeling, we walk in authenticity. When we ignore it, something inside us dims.

What moment in your life has made you feel deeply, unmistakably alive?

The Three Selves: Discovering Who You Really Are

William James reminds us that every meeting—every moment of connection—holds three versions of ourselves. But only one is the truth we often fear to explore.

“Whenever two people meet, there are really six people present. There is each man as he sees himself, each man as the other person sees him, and each man as he really is.” ― William James

Who are you?

William James, the Father of American Psychology gave us three possibilities:

1) How do I see myself?

2) How does the other see me?

3) Who am I really?

It takes heaps of courage to explore our inner workings and attempt to discover who we really are. If we have the courage to take that journey, we shouldn’t expect to get to the finish line. What we will discover is that we are like an onion and there is always another layer to peel. This is where perfectionist get it wrong, they see themselves as perfect or potentially becoming perfect. If one doesn’t really know who one really is how can one become perfect? It’s better to love one’s self as one is recognizing that we are imperfect and it’s quite OK to be that way.

As you read this post, ask yourself, which of the three selves do you find hardest to understand—how you see yourself, how others see you, or who you truly are?

Light for the Journey: The Power of Your Inner Picture: Becoming What You Envision

William James reminds us that transformation begins not in the world around us, but in the images we hold within.

There is a law in psychology that if you form a picture in your mind of what you would like to be, and you keep and hold that picture there long enough, you will soon become exactly as you have been thinking. ~ William James

Reflection

William James understood a timeless truth: the mind is the workshop of the soul. The picture we hold of ourselves becomes the blueprint for our reality. When we consistently imagine the person we wish to be—kind, strong, joyful, or brave—our thoughts, choices, and actions begin to align with that image. Over time, we quietly grow into it. The secret lies in persistence: to keep the vision alive even when the world feels resistant or progress slow. Transformation isn’t magic—it’s the steady unfolding of belief meeting effort. Hold your picture. Nurture it. Live toward it. You are painting your future every day with the brush of your thoughts.

Question for Readers:

What image of yourself are you choosing to hold today—and how might it shape who you become?

Act As If To Make It So

“Actions seems to follow feeling, but really actions and feeling go together; and by regulating the action, which is under the more direct control of the will, we can indirectly regulate the feeling, which is not. Thus the sovereign voluntary path to cheerfulness, if our cheerfulness be lost, is to sit up cheerfully and to act and speak as if cheerfulness were already there.” ― William James

Life is Worth Living – Believe It!

“Be not afraid of life. Believe that life is worth living, and your belief will help create the fact.” ― William James

Are You Ready To Make This Discovery?

“The greatest discovery of any generation is that a human can alter his life by altering his attitude.” ― William James
