Today’s Poem ~ O Beauty, Passing Beauty!

O Beauty, Passing Beauty!

Lord Alfred Tennyson

O beauty, passing beauty! Sweetest sweet!
How can thou let me waste my youth in sighs?
I only ask to sit beside thy feet.
Thou knowest I dare not look into thine eyes.
Might I but kiss thy hand! I dare not fold
My arms about thee–scarcely dare to speak.
And nothing seems to me so wild and bold,
As with one kiss to touch thy blessed cheek.
Methinks if I should kiss thee, no control
Within the thrilling brain could keep afloat
The subtle spirit. Even while I spoke,
The bare word “kiss” hath made my inner soul
To tremble like a lute string, ere the note
Hath melted in the silence that it broke.

Today’s Smile

Joe: “My job as a waiter has one good benefit.”

Pete: “What’s that, Joe?”

Joe: “It puts food on the table.”

Something to Think About

Think of the time wasted replaying an incident that happened earlier in the day. It’s easy to get wired and raise our blood pressure. Nothing good can come from it. Take the incident and metaphorically place it on a shelf and promise yourself you’ll visit it in a week. Most likely you’ll forget it’s on your metaphoric shelf. If you’re determined to fantasize, fantasize something enjoyable like a great vacation, being awarded an Oscar or the Nobel Prize. Hey, we can all dream, right?

Today’s Power Thought ~ A Taste of Freedom

The more we desire someone’s praise or affirmation, the more we become a prisoner to that person. When we free ourselves from receiving another’s praise or affirmation the greater our freedom.

A Better Life ~ A Good Friend

A good friend picks me up when I feel down.

A good friend listens quietly to me when I feel I will explode if I don’t talk to someone.

A good friend will me his/her best advice and not spare my feelings. They are honest and truthful.

A good friend is like a favorite shirt, you just like having it around.

A good friend’s arm around me in time of sorrow is priceless.

A good friend knows how to have fun and enjoy life and share his/her zest for life with me.

Today’s Good Word ~ Detour

Detour – Def: a different or less direct route to a place that is used to avoid a problem or to visit somewhere or do something on the way

Detours are part of life. They are ubiquitous. They occur on the highway, in our daily life, in the supermarket, and in our work. Detours can make us upset or give us another perspective. We never know what surprises will show up on one of our detours. One could meet the love of his/her life, get a great idea. Enjoy the detours in your life, you may end up being grateful the detour showed up.

Today’s Health Tip ~ Spicy Foods Help with Allergy Symptoms

Spicy foods with a little kick can help kick out allergy symptoms. “Anise, fennel, horseradish, and hot mustard can all act as natural decongestants — they offer allergy relief by stimulating the mucosal cilia to help break up congestion,” says Janet Maccaro, PhD, CNC, a clinical nutrition consultant in Scottsdale, Ariz. Look for recipes with those ingredients or add them to your favorite standbys when you start feeling stuffy.

Today’s Poem ~ Our Blessings

Our Blessings

Ella Wheeler Wilcox

Sitting to-day in the sunshine,
That touched me with fingers of love,
I thought of the manifold blessings
God scatters on earth, from above;
And they seemed, as I numbered them over,
Far more than we merit, or need,
And all that we lack is the angels
To make earth a heaven indeed.

The winter brings long, pleasant evenings,
The spring brings a promise of flowers
That summer breathes to fruition,
And autumn brings glad, golden hours.
The woodlands re-echo with music,
The moonbeams ensilver the sea;
There is sunlight and beauty about us,
And the world is as fair as can be.

But mortals are always complaining,
Each one thinks his own a sad lot;
And forgetting the good things about him,
Goes mourning for those he has not.
Instead of the star-spangled heavens,
We look on the dust at our feet;
We drain out the cup that is bitter,
Forgetting the one that is sweet.

We mourn o’er the thorn in the flower,
Forgetting its odour and bloom;
We pass by a garden of blossoms,
To weep o’er the dust of the tomb.
There are blessings unnumbered about us, –
Like the leaves of the forest they grow;
And the fault is our own – not the Giver’s –
That we have not an Eden below.
