Today’s Health Tip ~ Are You Getting Enough Magnesium?

Why is magnesium important?

Magnesium plays many crucial roles in the body, such as supporting muscle and nerve function and energy production. Low magnesium levels usually don’t cause symptoms. However, chronically low levels can increase the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and osteoporosis. . . .

Just a few servings of magnesium-rich foods a day can meet your need for this important nutrient. Nuts, seeds, whole grains, beans, leafy vegetables, milk, yogurt and fortified foods are good sources. One ounce of almonds contains 20% of the daily magnesium an adult needs. Even water (tap, mineral or bottled) can provide magnesium. Some laxatives and antacids also contain magnesium.

Today’s Poem ~ Sing — Sing — Music Was Given

Sing — Sing — Music Was Given

 Thomas Moore

Sing — sing — Music was given
To brighten the gay, and kindle the loving;
Souls here, like planets in heaven,
By harmony’s laws alone are kept moving.
Beauty may boast of her eyes and her cheeks,
But Love from the lips his true archery wings;
And she, who but feathers the dart when she speaks,
At once sends it home to the heart when she sings.
Then sing — sing — Music was given,
To brighten the gay, and kindle the loving;
Souls here, like planets in heaven,
By harmony’s laws alone are kept moving.

When Love, rock’d by his mother,
Lay sleeping as calm as slumber could make him,
“Hush, hush,” said Venus, “no other
Sweet voice but his own is worthy to wake him.”
Dreaming of music he slumber’d the while,
Till faint from his lip a soft melody broke,
And Venus, enchanted, look’d on with a smile,
While Love to his own sweet singing awoke.
Then sing — sing — Music was given,
To brighten the gay, and kindle the loving;
Souls here, like planets in heaven,
By harmony’s laws alone are kept moving.

Today’s Smile

Joe: “My wife complained that I never put the top on the toothpaste, so I started putting the top on when I finish brushing my teeth.”

Pete: “What did she say?”

Joe: “She said, “\’Did you stop brushing your teeth?'”

Something to Think About

I like my independence. I like to make my decisions without external interference. I like to choose my own path. I don’t always make the best decisions, but they are my decisions and I’ll take responsibility for them. For me, freedom is important. It marks my footprints. How about you? Are you independent or dependent? Are you a free spirit moving where the wind moves you? Do you take responsibility for your decisions good or bad?

A Better Life ~ You Are the One Person

One person who chooses to work through difficult issues with others until they are resolved is a community builder. He/she is as creative as Michelangelo in creating the statue, David. Guiding people to set aside personal interests and actively work together toward an agreeable solution is a task for the courageous. These are the people that hold families, work groups, and social organizations together. They change the world for the better. I think you are this type of person, I can feel your energy.

Today’s Good Word ~ Responsibility

Responsibility – Def: Good judgment and the ability to act correctly and make decisions on your own

We’ve all heard the expression, “take responsibility.” It’s easy to take responsibility when things are going right. It’s another story when things are going bad. It is why the first step in the 12-step program is to admit one is powerless to handle his/her alcohol problem. In effect, it is taking responsibility. When we take responsibility for the good and poor actions in our lives we are chiseling our character. A person of good character takes responsibility for his/her actions. He/she doesn’t manufacture lies, project blame elsewhere, but has the courage to stand on his/her two feet and take the consequences.

Today’s Power Thought ~ The Journey’s Lesson

It’s the journey that matters. The journey teaches us lessons. The most valuable lesson the journey teaches us is wisdom, the wisdom to listen to the voice of the journey and absorb its lessons.

Today’s Inspiration ~ Life is a Gift

“For me, every hour is grace. And I feel gratitude in my heart each time I can meet someone and look at his or her smile.” ~ Elie Wiesel

Today’s Heath Tip ~ Vitamin K for Blood Clotting & Healthy Bones

Vitamin K is a fat-soluble vitamin that comes in two forms. The main type is called phylloquinone, found in green leafy vegetables like collard greens, kale, and spinach. . . . Vitamin K helps to make various proteins that are needed for blood clotting and the building of bones. Prothrombin is a vitamin K-dependent protein directly involved with blood clotting. Osteocalcin is another protein that requires vitamin K to produce healthy bone tissue. Vitamin K is found throughout the body including the liver, brain, heart, pancreas, and bone. It is broken down very quickly and excreted in urine or stool. Because of this, it rarely reaches toxic levels in the body even with high intakes, as may sometimes occur with other fat-soluble vitamins.
