Today’s Health Tip ~ How are You Feeding Your Brain?
Eating Healthy Produces Big Benefits for the Brain
Think about it. Your brain is always “on.” It takes care of your thoughts and movements, your breathing and heartbeat, your senses — it works hard 24/7, even while you’re asleep. This means your brain requires a constant supply of fuel. That “fuel” comes from the foods you eat — and what’s in that fuel makes all the difference. Put simply, what you eat directly affects the structure and function of your brain and, ultimately, your mood.
Like an expensive car, your brain functions best when it gets only premium fuel. Eating high-quality foods that contain lots of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants nourishes the brain and protects it from oxidative stress — the “waste” (free radicals) produced when the body uses oxygen, which can damage cells.
Unfortunately, just like an expensive car, your brain can be damaged if you ingest anything other than premium fuel. If substances from “low-premium” fuel (such as what you get from processed or refined foods) get to the brain, it has little ability to get rid of them. Diets high in refined sugars, for example, are harmful to the brain. In addition to worsening your body’s regulation of insulin, they also promote inflammation and oxidative stress. Multiple studies have found a correlation between a diet high in refined sugars and impaired brain function — and even a worsening of symptoms of mood disorders, such as depression.
Something to Think About
Early voting has started in Texas with election day just two weeks ahead. I take voting seriously. I like to inform myself about the candidates and their positions. I don’t care for the negative ads I see on TV. I view negative ads as half-truths that tell me nothing about either candidate. Voting is a honor and one to take seriously. I’m happy I have choices to make. I may not vote for all winning candidates, but knowing I have a chance to express my viewpoint is a fundamental right in a democracy.
Today’s Smile
Joe: “I returning my radio for a refund. “
Pete: “What’s wrong with it?”
Joe: “It only plays in the morning. It’s an AM radio.”
Today’s Poem ~ A Character
A Character
William Wordsworth
I marvel how Nature could ever find space
For so many strange contrasts in one human face:
There’s thought and no thought, and there’s paleness and bloom
And bustle and sluggishness, pleasure and gloom.
There’s weakness, and strength both redundant and vain;
Such strength as, if ever affliction and pain
Could pierce through a temper that’s soft to disease,
Would be rational peace–a philosopher’s ease.
There’s indifference, alike when he fails or succeeds,
And attention full ten times as much as there needs;
Pride where there’s no envy, there’s so much of joy;
And mildness, and spirit both forward and coy.
There’s freedom, and sometimes a diffident stare
Of shame scarcely seeming to know that she’s there,
There’s virtue, the title it surely may claim,
Yet wants heaven knows what to be worthy the name.
This picture from nature may seem to depart,
Yet the Man would at once run away with your heart;
And I for five centuries right gladly would be
Such an odd such a kind happy creature as he.
Today’s Inspiration ~ What is Really Important
“Human life is far more important than just getting to the top of a mountain.”
Today’s Power Thought ~ An Approach to Life
I enjoy reading fiction. When I finish a book (usually an ebook) I return it to the library and download a book I have yet to read. I look forward to the mystery with anticipation. It’s a way we can approach life. Let yesterday go, look forward to today with great anticipation. Here’s wishing you the best day ever.
Something to Think About
Fall is in full swing in the northern hemisphere. Leaves are falling. The temperatures are dropping. The squirrels are gathering nuts. These are all signs that fall is here and winter is not far away. The seasons change. They don’t fight change. It is nature’s way. We can take lessons from nature. When change is inevitable, why fight it, adapt to it, make the best of it. Turn the change into something beautiful. Like each season, which has it’s own special beauty, we can make each season of our lives beautiful and let it shine brightly. C’mon, you can do it.
Today’s Poem ~ Who Am I?
My feet are on the hilltops.
My finger-tips are in the valleys and shores of
universal life.
Down in the sounding foam of primal things I
reach my hands and play with pebbles of
destiny.
I have been to hell and back many times.
I know all about heaven, for I have talked with God.
I dabble in the blood and guts of the terrible.
I know the passionate seizure of beauty
And the marvelous rebellion of man at all signs
reading “Keep Off.”My name is Truth and I am the most elusive captive
in the universe.
A Better Life ~ Is It Time to Heal?
We’ve all been wounded. For some, the wounds are open and bleeding. For others, the wounds are hidden, but they are there. Is it time to look compassionately at our wounds and cease blaming ourselves? Is it time to love the wounds into healing? Is it time to transform the wounds into lessons to nurture one’s growth?
