Today’s Health Tip ~ Want to Prevent Cognitive Decline?

Some people are simply more optimistic than others. In short, optimists look on the bright side. But optimism may mean more than just the ability to feel happy and elevate the mood of the people around you. Optimism also has been associated with improved cognitive health. They often are uplifting, fun and engaging to be around. They may also provide an even more important benefit both for themselves and their partners: their optimism proves a powerful tonic against cognitive decline.

Optimism can surface from time to time with everyone, but optimistic people are a breed apart. They believe the best possible outcome will happen in each situation, even if that outcome seems unlikely. They often look for the best in people, institutions, society as a whole or any given social situation. That includes finding reasons to be thankful for their age and not letting the challenges of aging get them down.

And it doesn’t just help the optimist. A 2019 study by the University of Michigan found that optimistic people contributed to the health of their partners. Their optimism staved off “the risk factors leading to  Alzheimer’s disease, dementia and cognitive decline as they grow old together.”

Think About It ~ Try Silence

It’s tough to find a quiet space with so many distractions vying for our attention. When i go to gym or for a walk most people I see have EarPods in their ears. They’re listening to music, podcasts, or speaking on their smartphone. Our brains don’t have a chance to empty and calm down. It may be that we feel uncomfortable with the silence. After all, in the silence we meet ourselves. We discover our thoughts, fears, and hopes. There is someone waiting to meet you. That person will only meet you in the silence. Try silence, I think you’ll discover the wonderful person you are.

Today’s Inspiration ~ Make Good Choices

“May your choices reflect your hopes, not your fears.”

~ Nelson Mandela

Today’s Poem ~ I Shall Keep Singing

I Shall Keep Singing

Emily Dickinson

I shall keep singing!
I shall keep singing!
Birds will pass me
On their way to Yellower Climes —
Each — with a Robin’s expectation —
I — with my Redbreast —
And my Rhymes —

Late — when I take my place in summer —
But — I shall bring a fuller tune —
Vespers — are sweeter than Matins — Signor —
Morning — only the seed of Noon —

Today’s Joke

Joe: “My girlfriend says she’s breaking up with me because I’m too impatient.”

Pete: “What do you think about that?”

Joe: “I can’t wait.”

Today’s Positive Thought ~ Searching for Happiness

“If you want to be happy, set a goal that commands your thoughts, liberates your energy, and inspires your hopes (Andrew Carnegie).”

We all want to be happy. We’ll try just about anything to achieve the feeling we call happiness. Sometimes what we try does the opposite of what we want. One thing is certain, we can’t chase happiness. Happiness happens often unexpected to us. When we actualize our authentic self and aspire to that which elevates us as a human being we discover we are living and working in a state where we are happy. Don’t settle for less than what actualizes your authentic self. Lift your eyes and heart and you’ll discover it.

Today’s Poem ~ My Song

My Song

Rabindranath Tagore

This song of mine will wind its music around you,
my child, like the fond arms of love.

The song of mine will touch your forehead
like a kiss of blessing.

When you are alone it will sit by your side and
whisper in your ear, when you are in the crowd
it will fence you about with aloofness.

My song will be like a pair of wings to your dreams,
it will transport your heart to the verge of the unknown.

It will be like the faithful star overhead
when dark night is over your road.

My song will sit in the pupils of your eyes,
and will carry your sight into the heart of things.

And when my voice is silenced in death,
my song will speak in your living heart.

Think About It ~ Find happiness within and you’ve won the lottery.

What would you do if you won a big lottery drawing? Lots of people dream that dream and fantasize what they’d do when they instantly win millions and millions of dollars. After the thrill is over, we’re still the same people. If we were unhappy with ourselves before we won, we’ll be unhappy with ourselves after we win. Conversely, if we’re happy with ourselves before we won, we’ll be happy with ourselves after we win. Money may change circumstances, but it doesn’t change the who we are. Only we can do that. That’s why buying things only brings temporary happiness that soon evaporates like the morning dew. Find happiness within and you’ve already won the lottery.

Today’s Joke

Joe: “My girlfriend told me I was a skeptic.”

Pete: “How did you react?”

Joe: “I don’t believe a word she said.”

Today’s Inspiration ~ Affirm Only the Good in Life

“If I dwell on what I don’t want, then I will get more of it. I affirm only the good in Life.”
