Today’s Poem ~ At Sunset

At Sunset

Emily Pauline Johnson

To-night the west o’er-brims with warmest dyes;
Its chalice overflows
With pools of purple colouring the skies,
Aflood with gold and rose;
And some hot soul seems throbbing close to mine,
As sinks the sun within that world of wine.

I seem to hear a bar of music float
And swoon into the west;
My ear can scarcely catch the whispered note,
But something in my breast
Blends with that strain, till both accord in one,
As cloud and colour blend at set of sun.

And twilight comes with grey and restful eyes,
As ashes follow flame.
But O! I heard a voice from those rich skies
Call tenderly my name;
It was as if some priestly fingers stole
In benedictions o’er my lonely soul.

I know not why, but all my being longed
And leapt at that sweet call;
My heart outreached its arms, all passion thronged
And beat against Fate’s wall,
Crying in utter homesickness to be
Near to a heart that loves and leans to me.

Today’s Health Tip ~ Looking to Stop Heartburn at Night?

4 Tips to Stop Heartburn at Night

  1. Does heartburn wake you up at night? Lying down makes it easier for stomach acids to go up into your esophagus. To keep acid down, use gravity. Try a specially designed wedge-shaped pillow to prop yourself up. Not enough? Boost the head of your bed 6 inches with wood blocks secured under the bedposts. Sleeping on your left side can also help digestion and calm acid reflux.
  2. Eat earlier. Going to bed on a full stomach makes nighttime heartburn more likely. A full stomach puts pressure on the valve at the top of the stomach, which is supposed to keep stomach acid out of the esophagus. So eat at least 2 to 3 hours before bedtime to give your stomach time to empty.
  3. Both of these after-dinner treats, coffee and chocolate, can trigger heartburn in some people. Other common offenders to skip at your evening meal include citrus fruits, onions, fizzy drinks, and fatty or spicy foods. Instead of fried entrees, try broiled.
  4. Exercise can make acid reflux worse. Avoid doing anything that’s very intense right before you go to bed. A leisurely walk after dinner and giving food time to settle may help prevent heartburn at night.

Today’s Health Tip ~ What Should You Eat with a Cold or Fever?

Eating the Right Foods will Help You Fight a Cold or Fever

The traditional bowl of chicken soup (or even plain broth) remains the gold standard when it comes to eating while sick, says Dr. Hodes. So, why is chicken soup or broth so good for you when you’re sick? For starters, the liquid-based meals work to prevent dehydration. They’re loaded with nutrients and antioxidants that can help you get well, too. Adding chicken to the soup brings protein and iron to boost your immune system, and any healthy veggies thrown into the pot are … well, just naturally healthy to eat. Plus, soup’s soothing warmth and steam can help ease a sore throat and clear up any mucus. Chicken soup or broth just makes you feel better,” says Dr. Hodes. “Even if you’re not feeling too hungry, some small sips can provide you with both fluid and nutrition in one go.”

Other food and drink to seek out when sick include:

    • Fruits and veggies high in vitamin C, including citrus fruit, strawberries, leafy green, broccoli and potatoes. (Juice can do the trick, too, while also helping to keep you hydrated.)
    • Herbal tea. Hydrating and relaxing!
    • Comfort food. You don’t feel well and you need food. A favorite dish may brighten your mood while also filling your belly.

Today’s Positive Thought ~ Enjoy the Ride

“We must be willing to let go of the life we have planned, so as to have the life that is waiting for us.” (E. M. Forster)

Our plans often go amiss. We plan on taking one road and find ourselves on a road we didn’t know existed. Those who don’t resist the new road and turn it into a new adventure find their destiny. Give it your best, and if your best takes you in a direction you didn’t anticipate, buckle up and enjoy the ride.

Feeling Good – Buoy Your Spirits

BUOY YOUR spirits by recording happy events. People who write about all the things they are thankful for are optimistic about the upcoming week and more satisfied overall with their lives, according to a University of California, Davis, study. They also feel physically stronger. “It’s hard to be bitter and mad when you’re feeling grateful,” says Sonja Lyubomirsky, PhD, author of the upcoming book The How of Happiness: A Scientific Approach to Getting the Life You Want.

But don’t overdo it. Women who kept a gratitude journal only once a week got a bigger boost in happiness than those asked to record their good fortune three times a week. Find the frequency that works for you–giving thanks shouldn’t feel like a chore.
