The real act of discovery consists not in finding new lands but in seeing with new eyes. The only adventure that is doomed from the start is the one we do not attempt. ~ Paul-Emile Victor
Francis Bret Harte
“The sky is clouded, the rocks are bare,
The spray of the tempest is white in air;
The winds are out with the waves at play,
And I shall not tempt the sea to-day.
“The trail is narrow, the wood is dim,
The panther clings to the arching limb;
And the lion’s whelps are abroad at play,
And I shall not join in the chase to-day.”
But the ship sailed safely over the sea,
And the hunters came from the chase in glee;
And the town that was builded upon a rock
Was swallowed up in the earthquake shock.
Proper nutrition plays a significant role in mental health, and deficiencies in certain nutrients can contribute to depression and suicidal thoughts. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish, flaxseeds, and walnuts, are particularly important for brain health. Low levels of these fatty acids have been linked to increased risk of depression and suicidal behavior. Ensuring a diet rich in essential nutrients can help support mental well-being and reduce the risk of suicide.
Joe: “I bought a keyboard and already I can play all the notes.”
Pete: “You must be a natural.”
Joe: ‘I still have to learn how to put them in the right order.”

Welcome to Episode 114 of “Journey from Grief to Healing” with Dr. Ray Calabrese. In this episode, Dr. Ray shares his personal journey of healing after the loss of his wife, Babe, and explores the concept of pattern interrupts to cope with emotional trauma.
Dr. Ray reflects on the notion that it takes a year of grieving for every three years of a relationship, and how this insight has helped him understand his own behaviors and emotions over the past eight years. He emphasizes that healing from grief is a unique process for everyone, and it’s crucial to continue living life despite the lingering pain.
Using metaphors like paddling a canoe and drawing inspiration from poets Wendell Berry and William Davies, Dr. Ray encourages listeners to embrace life fully, interrupt negative thought patterns, and find joy in everyday moments. He concludes with a call to action: break free from the grip of sadness, cherish the gift of life, and remain hopeful for the future.

Most problems can be solved if we set aside preconceived biases and work towards a common goal. It seems so easy. Why would anyone do anything else? On the way to the finish line, power, money, and unresolved anger gets in the way. The problems remain because of the lack of courage to set aside personal gain for the gain of all. It’s not helpless. We can do our part in our homes, places of work, and neighborhoods. We can lead the effort to define common goals benefiting everyone. We can call it out every time personal gain takes precedence over the gain of all. We have to do our part.

In every winter’s heart there is a quivering spring, and behind the veil of each night there is a shining dawn. ~ Khalil Gibran
Felicia Dorothea Hemans
Droop not, my Brother! I hear a glad strain—
We shall burst forth like streams from the winter-night’s chain;
A flag is unfurl’d, a bright star of the sea,
A ransom approaches, we yet shall be free!
Where the pines wave, where the light chamois leaps,
Where the lone eagle hath built on the steeps,
Where the snows glisten, the mountain rills foam,
Free as the falcon’s wing, yet shall we roam.
Where the hearth shines, where the kind looks are met,
Where the smiles mingle, our place shall be yet!
Crossing the desert, o’ersweeping the sea,
Brother, brave Brother! we yet shall be free!
