Today’s Thought: Separating Truth from Fiction

When I was a small kid my mom would me tales of a fictional character named Maurice Quinlin. All of the tales took place in the Maine woods. She was very good at it. I hung on to every word to find out if Maurice Quinlin escaped from the wolves or bears. Imagine my dreams those nights!! I looked forward to her telling me those stories. I outgrew Maurice Quinlin and knew the stories were all made up. These days we have to separate truth from fiction when we hear some politicians. It’s not too hard to do when the stories they tell are absurdly false. Be wise and discern.

Today’s Poem: A Night Thought by William Wordsworth

A Night Thought

William Wordsworth

Lo! where the Moon along the sky
Sails with her happy destiny;
Oft is she hid from mortal eye
Or dimly seen,
But when the clouds asunder fly
How bright her mien!

Far different we–a froward race,
Thousands though rich in Fortune’s grace
With cherished sullenness of pace
Their way pursue,
Ingrates who wear a smileless face
The whole year through.

If kindred humours e’er would make
My spirit droop for drooping’s sake,
From Fancy following in thy wake,
Bright ship of heaven!
A counter impulse let me take
And be forgiven.

Health Facts: When You Eat Affects Weight Gain

Two important health facts related to how weight loss or gain is affected by meal times are:

  1. Eating Late at Night Can Lead to Weight Gain: Studies show that consuming large meals or high-calorie snacks late at night may disrupt the body’s natural circadian rhythm and lead to weight gain. This is because metabolism slows down during sleep, making it harder to burn calories consumed close to bedtime.
  2. Eating Earlier in the Day Supports Weight Loss: Consuming most of your daily calories earlier in the day, particularly during breakfast or lunch, aligns with your body’s natural metabolic processes. Research suggests that the body’s ability to process and use food is more efficient earlier in the day, which can help support weight loss efforts.

Today’s Joke: Joe’s grandpa visits, what could go wrong?

Joe: “ My grandpa spent the weekend with us and he has a blackeye..”

Pete: “ What happened?”

Joe: “I knew his room was too small for a cuckoo clock. “

The Hidden Cost of Seeking Approval

One of the interesting things I observe is how some people seek approval from those they believe to be in a powerful or prestigious position. It happens at work, school (we’ve all seen the brown noses), church, or on social media. There’s a price that one pays when he/she seeks approval of another. The price is one’s freedom. Think about it. If I make my decisions based on what I think someone whose approval I need, then I give that person power over me. Not needing another’s approval often comes at a cost especially when it is associated with career mobility. My experience is that any job where you have to suck up to get it, isn’t worth it.

Today’s Poem: Nature is What We See by Emily Dickinson

Nature is What We See

Emily Dickinson

Nature’ is what we see—
The Hill—the Afternoon—
Squirrel—Eclipse—the Bumble bee—
Nay—Nature is Heaven—
Nature is what we hear—
The Bobolink—the Sea—
Thunder—the Cricket—
Nay—Nature is Harmony—
Nature is what we know—
Yet have no art to say—
So impotent Our Wisdom is
To her Simplicity.
