Healthy Tips:

Today’s Healthy Tip:

Eat a balanced diet: Include plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, and healthy fats.

You can’t go wrong following that tip. Sometimes friends don’t help us. I was recently at a dinner party. I’m disciplined on what I eat. Generally, if it’s on the above list, I’ll eat it. The foods at the party were spread out buffet style. I filled my plate with foods I like. A friend sidled up to me and spears a fork full of something I wouldn’t eat. She says, “Ray, this is delicious. Here, try it.” I replied, “No thank you.” She persisted, “Go ahead, it’s only a sample, try it.” I replied, “No thanks” and moved along. In social settings people can often apply pressure to “try” something we normally wouldn’t try. If it happens to you, give a polite no, no explanation needed. As was the case with my friend, it took two no’s to get their attention. Be polite but persistent, you don’t have to try anything you don’t want. And, trying it isn’t being nice, it’s being disrespectful to one’s self.

Still Hanging in on the New Year’s Resolutions?

How are you holding up keeping your New Year’s resolutions? Researchers tell us most people quit their New Year’s resolutions within two weeks. That’s neither good nor bad. No one is perfect. It also depends on how we look at our resolutions. We can increase our odds of sustaining our new year’s resolution by cutting ourselves some slack. Let’s say, for example, I resolved to go walking every night after dinner. Today, I came home from work exhausted. All I wanted to do is crash on the sofa, snack, and watch TV. It felt so good when I did it. I’m going to cut myself some slack. Big deal, I took a day off. I’ll start again tomorrow or the day after. I think when we’re kind to ourselves and stop the critical chatter in our brain, we’re more likely to keep on going. Success generally comes in small steps with lots of stumbling between steps. Enjoy the journey.

Hold Nothing Back – Enjoy Life’s Adventure

A Good Man ~ A Poem by James Whitcomb Riley

A Good Man

James Whitcomb Riley

(Note: James Whitcomb Riley died in 1916. His poem, A Good Man, could easily be titled A Good Woman)

A good man never dies–
  In worthy deed and prayer
And helpful hands, and honest eyes,
If smiles or tears be there:
Who lives for you and me–
Lives for the world he tries
To help–he lives eternally.
  A good man never dies.

II

Who lives to bravely take
His share of toil and stress,
And, for his weaker fellows’ sake,
  Makes every burden less,–
He may, at last, seem worn–
  Lie fallen–hands and eyes
Folded–yet, though we mourn and mourn,
  A good man never dies.

Healthy Tips: Is it Really That Important?

Today’s Health Tip

Manage stress: Practice relaxation techniques such as yoga, meditation, or deep breathing.

I’m a pretty much laid back guy. It’s probably why south Texas appeals to me. It has a nice laid back feel to me. It wasn’t always this way with me. There was a time when I was traveling at warp speed (note the reference for Star Trek fans). I went on a silent retreat to a Benedictine monastery. I was there two hours and knew it was a mistake. I had to make it to Sunday noon. I didn’t think it was possible to be quiet that long. Surely these monks didn’t understand the importance of noise and chaos in one’s life. Surprise, surprise. By the time Sunday noon rolled around I’d experienced a deep sense of personal peace. I was beginning to discover what was important and what wasn’t as important as I thought it was. My life changed.
