Podcast: When the World Doesn’t Reward Your Hard Work: Lessons from Jesse Owens

What happens after you become the most famous athlete on the planet, only to return to a home that won’t let you through the front door? In Season 1, Episode 138 of The Optimistic Beacon, Dr. Ray Calabrese explores the “Long Hurdle” of Jesse Owens. While the 1936 Berlin Olympics cemented his legacy, the years that followed tested his soul.

From being snubbed by the White House to racing against horses just to feed his family, Jesse Owens’ life is a masterclass in true perseverance. Dr. Ray breaks down why perseverance isn’t a single burst of energy, but the quiet, exhausting work of staying true to yourself over decades of indifference. Whether you are currently in a “professional desert” or feel like your hard work is being ignored, this episode offers a “ray of sunshine” and a roadmap for maintaining your dignity when the stadium lights go out.

Key highlights include:

  • The psychological toll of the 1936 homecoming.
  • Why Jesse Owens chose “undignified” work to support his family.
  • The difference between linear success and the “long-game” strategy of character.
  • A reflection on Walter Elliot’s wisdom: “Perseverance is many short races one after the other.”

There’s Value in Hard Knocks

Sometimes life gives you hard knocks so we can learn lessons we were otherwise too hard headed to learn. Some never learn the lessons and the hard knocks are repeated until they learn them. Some never learn and the end up bitterly disappointed in life, angry, and resentful. That’s the story of the ego. The irony of having hard knocks is that the lessons of setting our egos aside becomes the key to the door that leads to a life full of opportunities to contribute to our families and communities.

Life Has a Way of Teaching Us

I went to a wake and funeral this week. A friend of mine lost her brother. It didn’t matter if I knew her brother or didn’t know him. There are somethings in life that are important to do. Supporting someone who lost a love one is one of them. In my experience I’ve learned we remember who showed up. I remember who didn’t show up at my daughters’ weddings. I remember who didn’t show up at my parents funerals. And, I remember who didn’t show up at my wife’s funeral. I don’t hold anything against them, but I remember. What it taught me was life has a way of teaching us who the people are we can count on and who the people are who may smile at us but when it matters, you can’t count on them.

Fill the Day with Love

Happy Valentine’s Day! One of my daughters was born on this day. It makes the day extra special for me. Valentine’s day reminds us that life teaches us that love is the answer. The more we learn to love, the more love fills our life and transforms us. We are all in stages of becoming and the more we learn to love the more we evolve into what we can be. Fill this day with love and continue to fill each succeeding with love and together we will change the world.

Today’s Thought: A Dog’s Lessons

My friend has a wonderful dog. He got it at the dog rescue agency. The dog is playful and a delight to watch. My friend stopped by a garage sale and picked up a squeeze ball. The squeeze ball is now his dog’s favorite toy. I envy his dog. It amuses itself with simple things. It lets the tension of a passing garbage truck roll off his back and he’s back at play. I’d like to let tension roll off me as easily or let go of some of the many electronic gadgets I have. If there’s a new one, I need it. When is the new iPhone coming out? LOL Our dogs are good reminders to lighten up, let go, and relax.

Today’s Thought: Make Failure Your Fuel for Future Successes

A man is great not because he hasn’t failed; a man is great because failure hasn’t stopped him. ~ Confucius

Failure happens. It’s part of life. When we choose to push on in spite of failure we turn failure into lessons. Failure can be our best teacher if we’re open to learning, changing, and understanding how to make our failure our fuel for future success.
