You can live in the past, or you can live in the present but you cannot live in both. Living takes place in the present with an eye toward tomorrow. Be grateful for what was and move on. Life calls us to live and enjoy the moment, to continually grow, and learn from every experience.
Being present in the moment involves being in your body and feeling your feelings—two things that lots of folks actually don’t know how to do.
Ask yourself these two questions: What does fear feel like in your body? What are you afraid of?
If you don’t know the answer to these questions, you probably aren’t present in the moment. Being present involves vulnerability, humility, and openness.
Being in the past or the future involves living in your head and ignoring what’s going on in your body and emotions.
The past and the future stop being so relevant and intriguing when you’re able to get in your body and feel your feelings. When you can do these two things, you actually want to be in the present moment. Try these tips: How to Live in the Moment and Stop Worrying.
“Yesterday’s the past, tomorrow’s the future, but today is a gift. That’s why it’s called the present.”
~ Bil Keane
“The past is behind, learn from it. The future is ahead, prepare for it. The present is here, live it.”
“I can’t go back to yesterday – because I was a different person then (Lewis Carroll).” Yesterday is an illusion, its only connection to reality are our memories and how we choose to interpret memories (e.g. photos, digital material). Where it’s happening is now. When we let our memories decide who we are or how we should act, we become prisoners to the past. We’re different now than we were then. We’ve paid our dues. We are free from our past. We have experiences that taught us important lessons. Let the past go and live today. Good things are coming your way. The only way you can see them is if you are looking ahead.
“He who spends time regretting the past loses the present and risks the future.”
Your past doesn’t matter. It’s the present that counts. You were born good, you were born to contribute meaningful to society in a special way that only you can contribute. It’s your destiny. Rise to the occasion.
The only power our past has over us, is the power we give it. We are not our past, we are our present. There is no law requiring us to continue doing what we’ve done in the past. If it didn’t work, we can change it. It’s within our power. What we are becoming unfolds with each of our daily decisions.
There is a time to speak. There is a time to listen. There is a time to be present and do nothing more than be present. Wisdom is in knowing the difference.
