🍎 Today’s Health Question ~ Has the Pandemic Made Your Brain feel Broken?

Some Tips to Bring Stability Back to Our Brains

Considering that the Covid-related strains on our lives aren’t going away in the near-term, what can we do to feel less scattered? . . . Inger Burnett-Zeigler, a clinical psychologist and associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Northwestern University, said that we should be assessing all of our responsibilities, and seeing if there is anything at all we can take off our plates. “A lot is being demanded of us,” she said — and it’s not sustainable. Dr. Burnett-Zeigler also recommended we try to avoid multitasking as much as possible: Keep one window open at a time on your computer, and resist the urge to toggle between work and signing your kid up for camp at the same time. “Attending to one thing for each moment can help to improve your ability to store information,” she said.

🌾 Today’s Poem ~ The Peace of Wild Things

The peace of wild things
 Wendell Berry
When despair grows in me
and I wake in the middle of the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting for their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

✒️ Writers’ Wisdom ~ A Reason to Write Fiction

“Fiction gives us empathy: it puts us inside the minds of other people, gives us the gifts of seeing the world through their eyes. Fiction is a lie that tells us true things, over and over.” ~ Neil Gaiman

💡 Something to Think About

A lot of our unhappiness is a result of not knowing and setting our boundaries. When  we know who we are and  who we are not, we set our boundaries. Having set boundaries, we can make sure we are not saying no to ourselves when we say yes to someone else.

🌾 Today’s Poem ~ Hymn of Joy

Hymn of Joy
Henry Van Dyke
To the music of Beethoven’s ninth symphony

Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee,
God of glory, Lord of love;
Hearts unfold like flowers before Thee,
Praising Thee their sun above.
Melt the clouds of sin and sadness;
Drive the dark of doubt away;
Giver of immortal gladness,
Fill us with the light of day!

All Thy works with joy surround Thee,
Earth and heaven reflect Thy rays,
Stars and angels sing around Thee,
Centre of unbroken praise:
Field and forest, vale and mountain,
Blooming meadow, flashing sea,
Chanting bird and flowing fountain,
Call us to rejoice in Thee.

Thou art giving and forgiving,
Ever blessing, ever blest,
Well-spring of the joy of living,
Ocean-depth of happy rest!
Thou our Father, Christ our Brother, —
All who live in love are Thine:
Teach us how to love each other,
Lift us to the Joy Divine.

Mortals join the mighty chorus,
Which the morning stars began;
Father-love is reigning o’er us,
Brother-love binds man to man.
Ever singing march we onward,
Victors in the midst of strife;
Joyful music lifts us sunward
In the triumph song of life.
