A Better Life ~ Get Excited About Life

Take time out for a personal checkup. Are you excited about who you are and the future that lies ahead of you? No matter your age, you are capable of moving far beyond of where you are at the moment. Think of it this way, when a plant stops growing it starts dying. You’ve got lots of growing to do. There are so many things to learn, so many places to see, so many potential challenges to test us. The only thing that stops us from growing is are the excuses we’ll make so we can take it easy and let someone else do it. Don’t wave the white flag. There’s an exciting journey waiting for you. All you have to do is jump aboard and enjoy the ride.

Today’s Good Word ~ Sunshine

Sunshine – Def: (1) the light and heat that come from the sun. (2) happiness or pleasure.

All living beings need the sunshine. We can’t survive without it. Sunshine is great metaphor. When we bring the sunshine to others, we share a spirit of joy and happiness. Our smile radiates our warmth, our eyes sparkle with a deep happiness, and we give off a vibe that everything, no matter had bad it might be, is going to work out. When we bring the sunshine to others, we lift their spirits, light up their darkness, and leave them feeling better than when we entered their orbit. They now walk with a smile and the sun and blue sky overhead. C’mon, life is good, bring the sunshine.

Today’s Health Tip ~ Fats are Essential in a Healthy Diet

Fat performs a number of functions and provides several health benefits:

  • Energy: Fat is an excellent energy source. It provides 9 calories per gram, whereas protein and carbs each provide 4 calories per gram.
  • Hormone and gene regulation: Fats regulate the production of reproductive and steroid hormones, as well as genes involved in growth and metabolism.
  • Brain function: Adequate fat intake is important for brain health, including mood.
  • Absorption of fat-soluble vitamins: Vitamins A, D, E and K must be consumed with fat to be properly absorbed.
  • Flavor and fullness: Adding fat to foods makes them tastier and more filling.

The fat stored inside your body helps:

  • insulate your organs
  • keep you warm
  • provide energy that you can use in the case of a calorie deficiency.

Note: Fats are high in calories. Transfats are a no-no. Try to consume the majority of your fats from healthy fat sources.

Today’s Poem ~ Meeting at Night

Meeting at Night

Robert Browning

The gray sea and the long black land;

And the yellow half-moon large and low;

And the startled little waves that leap

In fiery ringlets from their sleep,

As I gain the cove with pushing prow,

And quench its speed i’ the slushy sand.

Then a mile of warm sea-scented beach;

Three fields to cross till a farm appears;

A tap at the pane, the quick sharp scratch

And blue spurt of a lighted match,

And a voice less loud, through its joys and fears,

Than the two hearts beating each to each!

Today’s Smile

Joe: “I like to hold hands when I go to a movie.”

Pete: “That’s romantic.”

Joe: “Yes, but it always scares people I don’t know.”

Something to Think About

I’ve read about storm chasers. I’ve seen YouTube videos of people chasing tornados. We do that, sometimes intentionally and sometimes inadvertently, when we stir the water and create issues that didn’t exist or were long dormant. As for me, I prefer to chase rainbows. They’re those bright, multicolored arcs that hang out in the sky as a storm is ending. Chasing rainbows is a way of searching for the good in each person we meet, taking pleasure from the wonderful gifts life tosses our way each day, and trying to do something meaningful each day that adds to making life a bit better for others. Are you a storm chaser or a rainbow chaser?

A Better Life ~ Remembering Names

I wasn’t always good at remembering names. Sometimes I would speak with a person and never ask them their name. I was too embarrassed to ask. I decided I would learn how to remember names. I studied different memory strategies and became good at it. I learned people like being called by their name. Our names are personal. It’s who we are. They are assigned to us at birth. A record begins and our names are on it. The simple act of asking someone their name is a sign of respect. It says, I care enough about you to know who you are. When I forget a name I’m no longer embarrassed to say, “I forgot your name.”, This morning I saw someone I hadn’t seen in a while. I remembered his name. I said, “Hi, Juan, how are you?” Juan wasn’t quite sure of my name. He said, “It’s Ray, right?” I nodded. After a brief conversation, we wished each other a great day. Make an effort to remember names. You’ll make lots of new friends and make people feel good when you greet them by name.

Today’s Good Word ~ Anticipation

Anticipation – Def: a feeling of excitement about something that is going to happen in the near future

As a child I remember anticipating Christmas. I couldn’t wait for Christmas and my excitement grew by the day. I still anticipate Christmas. I enjoy being with friends and family. I enjoy going to church on Christmas Day. The event matched my anticipation. Anticipation is a healthy emotion when we anticipate positive results, a good time, and a new adventure. Anticipation ignites a spark of life within us. We get our passports ready, we buy airplane tickets, we buy new clothes, and we eagerly await our trip. Once we arrive, we anticipate the new things we’ll see, the new foods we will try, and the new people we will meet. Set yourself up for a healthy dose of anticipation. It’s healthy to anticipate adventures, positive outcomes, and good times. You deserve it. Don’t wait now is the time.
